South Omo is unique in that besides the home of the richest national parks of the country it's a living museum whose inhabitants seem intent on outdoing each other when it comes to outwardly bizarre rituals and decorations. Body scarring, lip plates, bull-jumping, stick fighting - in different parts of South Omo these are all part of the way of life.
Tour Itinerary:
Day 1: Depart by 4x4 vehicles through the Rift Valley Lakes for Arbaminch (505km). En-route visit the Dorze people, renowned cotton weavers as well construction of beehive-shaped bamboo woven dwellings. Overnight hotel.
Day 2: AM excursion to Nechisar National Park a heaven for large herds of plains game and PM boat ride over Lake Chamo to viewing crocodiles and Hipps. Overnight hotel.
Day 3: Leave for Jinka (256km) enjoying the extraordinary cultures of Tsemai, Ari and Bena tribes who like the other Omo people preserve their traditional ways of life hardly changed from what they were centuries ago. Overnight hotel.
Day 4: Drive through the natural forests and undulating terrains to Mursi Village (120km). Undeniably, the highlight of your Omo Safari will be the visit of the Mursi women who wear clay lip plates. PM game viewing in Mago National Park. Overnight camping.
Day 5: Depart for Murulle (130km) home of Karo people who are considered the masters of body painting and decorate their bodies with chalk paint often imitating the spotted plumage of a guinea fowl. Overnight camping.
Day 6: AM excursion to Kangaten to visit, crossing the Omo River, the Bumi tribe who use scarification for cosmetic purposes. PM leave for Turmi (125km) en-route visiting the Geleb (Dasanech) tribe in Omorate. Overnight camping.
Day 7: Full day visit in and around Turmi the villages of the archetypal South Omo residents the Hammer people that enjoy body decoration like the other Omo area tribes. Overnight camping.
Day 8: Drive to Konso (190) visiting Albore tribe's and PM visit Konso villages. Overnight hotel.
Day 9: Depart for Yabello (100km) and PM excursion to Ili Sod (200km) saline Crater Lake where the Borena people extract salt. Overnight hotel.
Day 10: Leave for Langano (370km) visiting en-route Sidama people villages, Monoliths of Tutu Fela and Tututi Stelae fields and some coffee plantations. Overnight hotel.
Day 11: Drive back to Addis Ababa visiting the Rift Valley lakes.
