Where else to start a tour in Algeria than in the wonderful Algiers? This special destination displays its unique history through its architecture and people, with charming boulevards that date back to the period of the 130-year French presence in the capital city in the first half of the 19th century and the 16th-century Kasbah, built as an Ottoman fort and palace for the local ruler. Indeed, the entire country of Algeria makes for a fascinating historical journey and we make full use of our 11 days in the country, taking in the innumerable remnants of the once-great Roman Empire, ancient Phoenician trading posts, prehistoric cave- and rock paintings, splendid mosques, museums and some of the best-preserved relics and sites of antiquity in all of North Africa.
The natural environment in Algeria boasts a splendor as inspiring as its man-made attractions and we ensure we have the opportunity and ample time to appreciate it; we travel along the beautiful Mediterranean coast, gaze at grand mountains and spectacular gorges, and wander through 'stone forests' and across the lunar landscapes of plateau in Tassili National Park. After a comprehensive tour of Algerian sights, during which we also familiarize ourselves with the unique contemporary culture and intriguing history of the country, we fly from Algiers to Tunis, Tunisia. We spend some time Carthage, a region founded in 814BC by Phoenicians from the eastern Mediterranean and one that the Romans entirely destroyed in the 2nd century BC before incorporating it into the Roman Empire and then we head southwards from Tunis to visit a handful of other notable attractions, such as grandiose temples and theaters, forums and bustling markets.
Among other activities, we enjoy the dramatic scenery en route through the cork forests of northwest Tunisia in the area called the Khroumirie Region and visit the cavernous homes of the troglodytes, before eventually returning to Tunis to fly to Malta, where we spend the remaining five days of our tour. We sail the routes of the Knights of St. John and the great Ottoman fleet and bear witness to monuments that can only be fully appreciated from the sea, saunter through beautiful towns and gardens, learn about Maltese prehistory in the southern regions of the island and visit its most important historical sites. Malta's abundance of attraction means we'll be busy for our last couple of days on our tour, but it'll be well worth the rewards.
