Before setting sail for Antarctica, we spend a couple of days in Buenos Aires, Argentina, to take in some of the sights in this cosmopolitan city known as "the Paris of South America" for its wide boulevards and European-style architecture. We tour some of the most important historical sights on and around the Plaza Mayo and visit the tombs of "Evita" Peron and Jose de San Martin, the man who, along with Simon Bolivar, liberated South America from Spanish rule at the beginning of the 19th century.
From there, we travel to the world's southernmost city, Ushuaia in Argentina, and admire glacial peaks and some of the most dramatic sceneries on the planet in a place where daylight lasts until well after 10 p.m. We cast off from Ushuaia on our ice-strengthened vessel and make headway for Antarctica through the Beagle Channel and across the Drake Passage, while our on-board naturalists lead fascinating discussions about the bird and marine life of Antarctica.
For environmentalists, ecotourists, scientists and nature enthusiasts, a tour through sheet ice and past the gargantuan icebergs of Antarctica yields an unforgettable experience and we make sure that we voyage under prime conditions so as to maximize the opportunity to see wildlife such as penguins, albatrosses, elephant seals and whales.
