Almost 40 per cent of the Argentinean population reside in the thronging Buenos Aires, yet this first city on our tour proves accessible enough for comprehensive exploration via its public transportation system. Known as 'The Paris of South America', Buenos Aires mixes European with South American architectural style, the result being a highly distinctive and intriguing destination brimming with historic sites of interest and cultural uniqueness.
After visiting cathedrals, museums and palaces in this memorable city, we make our way to Patagonia, a region renowned for its mind-boggling natural beauty and wildlife. Passing through towns with visible Welsh and Italian roots, we avoid the usual tourist traps and come face-to-face with some of Argentina's wondrous marine residents, namely whales, sea lions, seals and penguins, then onwards to the world's southernmost city, Ushuaia. Plunging canyons with deep fjords, thick green forest and pristine lakes are the hallmarks of our drive to the Beagle channel, at which point we have the chance to extend our exploration of the area by casting off to view some offshore sights.
To end the Argentina leg of the tour, we gaze at bewitching glaciers and watch in awe as enormous chunks of ice break off and crash into the channel. Crossing the border into Chile, we get to grips with the country's history and culture with a visit to some museums and important historic cites, then head down the Chilean Central Valley, marveling at the magnificent Andes mountain range and stopping in at some world-famous wineries. We enter national parks renowned for abounding wildlife and spectacular sceneries of waterfalls and dense forest; we witness a diversity of flora and fauna that only Patagonia can boast; and we marvel at super-heated thermal pools as they gurgle in frozen ground with snow-capped mountains as a backdrop. Venturing into urban settings, we explore the many dazzling sights of Santiago, then end our tour by learning about the legacies of the ancients on Easter Island. We fly home from Santiago.
