Before venturing into the wilds, however, we spend time in the ever-colorful Buenos Aires, kicking off this magical 18-day expedition through South America by enjoying the urban charm of one of the most frenetic cities on the continent. From here, it’s on to the cascading magnificence that is the crescent-shaped Iguazu Falls, a site that the United Nations has declared a protected area of considerable worldwide importance. Taller than Niagara Falls and stretching for two miles along the Iguazu River, the spectacle of the Falls numbers among the greatest natural sights on the planet. We stop in at quaint villages and hike through thick forests and fertile glades as we explore the culture and nature of this special region of Argentina.
Our trek over mountainous ridges and along alpine paths sees us admiring awe-inspiring views of Monte Fitz Roy, a peak dubbed ‘the King of Patagonia’ and one that is considered one of the most beautiful on Earth, clambering onto glaciers for an optional ice-hike in Glacier National Park and tackling the lower slopes of Cerro Torre, perhaps one of the world’s most difficult mountains to climb due to its overhanging mushroom icecap. Across the border in Chile, we see the massive granite monoliths shaped by glacier ice that give Torres del Paine National Park its name and marvel at the diverse landscapes and unique ecosystems that make it one of the finest national parks in South America. We enjoy rides on catamarans and boats on Lake Pehoe and in the Beagle channel, venture through the French Valley to learn about the lifestyles of indigenous ranchers, and visit the world’s southernmost city at Ushuaia.
