Starting off in Armenia’s capital, Yerevan, we have the chance to immerse ourselves in one of the most historically important centers in a region of the world renowned for significant sites of interest. Wandering streets lined with pink-hued houses constructed from the colored ‘tuf’ stone, which is quarried only in Armenia, we enjoy an entirely unique architectural style that can be found nowhere else in the world and cultural atmosphere that is impossible to replicate. Leaving the capital and heading into the surrounding countryside, we explore centuries-old temples, fortresses, UNESCO Heritage churches, monasteries and major Christian sites as well as admiring blue-green alpine lakes en route to the Georgian border.
We spend a couple of days in the Georgian capital city, Tbilisi, once the most important political and economic heart of the Middle East and a major hub on the trading route that connected Europe and Asia; the Silk Road. We travel through semi-arid desert landscapes, investigating fascinating cave frescos, marveling at architectural monuments and exploring Georgia’s world-famous wine region, before crossing into Azerbaijan to visit towns founded more than 2,700 years ago, tour medieval palaces and beautiful mosques and take in the sights in Baku, the ‘City of the Winds’. Lastly, we journey to Iran to discover a land of plenty whose inhabitants are descended from the most ancient of civilizations. From the bustling capital, Tehran, a city considered one of the country’s newer metropolises -- though settlements in the area date back to 6,000BC – to the former capital of Shiraz, once the most important city in the Islamic world in medieval times, and to Isfahan, arguably Iran’s most beautiful city, we immerse ourselves in the many facets of this outstanding destination and reluctantly head home from Tehran after a comprehensive week of exploration.
