Tour Itinerary:
Day 1: Muang Ngoi - Ban Kiew Kan
Leaving Ngoi Kao in the morning, we make a stop and explore Tam Gang and Tam Pha Keo caves about half an hour outside the village. These cool, water-filled caves are several kilometers in length with waterfalls and rock formations and were used during the war as a bomb shelter. Continuing from the caves, we follow the trail passing through fields and dramatic limestone cliffs before arriving at Ban Houay Sen in about 1.5 hours. Take a small break with refreshments in the village rest house. From there, Ban Kiew Kan is reached by a two hour climb through primary forest with beautiful views of the limestone peaks.
Ban Kiew Kan is a friendly Khamu village where you can see baskets being made, take photos of the traditional Khamu homes, and bathe in the natural spring. After eating a locally-prepared meal and experiencing a baci, we stay overnight in the two community guesthouses.
Day 2: Ban Kiew Kan - Ban Hadsapeuy - Muang Ngoi
After breakfast, we start our 3 to 4 hours trek to Ban Hadsapeuy on the Ou River. From Ban Kiew Kan, the trail climbs briefly, before descending through forest and then fields to arrive at a stream. The next hour is a beautiful shady walk along the river, before emerging to hike a small group of hills to arrive at Ban Hadsapeuy. Take a break with refreshments (including fresh coconut) before boarding a local boat for the stunning 30-minute trip down the river to Muang Ngoi. We arrive at Muang Ngoi around lunchtime.
