An extensive sandstone mountain range 40 kilometers northeast of Vientiane is the site of one of Laos’ most beautiful nature reserves, Phou Khao Khouay NPA. Key species are white-cheeked gibbons, elephants and Green Peafowl, a bird believed to be close to extinction in Laos. Also spotted have been tigers, bears, and langurs, as well as various reptiles, amphibians and birds. While sightings of smaller animals are relatively common, a great deal of patience and luck is needed to observe larger species. Of the two herds of elephants known to inhabit this National Park, one has quite recently chosen to roam the bamboo thickets around the village of Ban Na.

Tour Itinerary:

Day 1: Vientiane - Phou Khao Khouay - Ban Na

We drive south to the Phou Khao Khouay National Protected Area to set out on a fascinating 6 six hour trek, a 14 km long trail passes under the canopy, mostly uphill and across several ridges. We encounter the villages of the lowland Lao and if we’re very lucky we may even spot rare wild elephants. This evening we are guests in Ban Na village in a basic, traditional home stay built on stilts.
Trekking distance: 14 km/5-6 hours

Day 2: Ban Na - Vientiane

For those that wish, there’s the chance to go for a short walk around the village in search of more wildlife. We then drive to some nearby waterfalls and trek for approximately 2 hours. Following lunch we return to the capital. The remainder of the day is free to explore the city.
Trekking distance: 7 km/2 hours

Note: Maximum 8 people per tour group. Optional A/C 4WD minibus or 4WD Jeep at extra cost

Best during the rainy season (May-October) when the reserve comes alive as the forest become green and lush, the waterfalls reach their full flow and sources of vibrantly colored butterflies fill the sky
