Landing in Poland's capital, Warsaw, we take time to explore the churches, palaces and marketplaces of the Old Town that underwent massive restoration efforts after the Second World War. The city is an outstanding example of a near-total reconstruction of a span of history covering the 13th to the 20th century and from here, we travel through quaint cobblestone villages with tall, narrow buildings, peaked roofs and decorative facades to get a taste of rural life in Poland. Passing rolling hills, thick forests and tranquil lakes, we visit some of Poland's most popular vacation areas to take in the stunning landscapes that are a perpetual draw to thousands of holiday-goers every year. In Belarus, we find countless memorials and monuments dedicated to the casualties and victims of the Great Patriotic War, also known as the Second World War, and a plethora of historically and culturally significant sites. Last, but by no means least, is a visit to Ukraine.
In the 'western' capital of Lviv, we find a fabulous blend of architectural styles, with fourteenth-century Gothic cathedrals, Renaissance monasteries and simplistic, traditional Armenian structural design all sharing the skyline. Making our way across this abundant land, we visit UNESCO Heritage churches, intriguing caves and catacombs with religious significance, and awesome Byzantine fortresses, as well as getting a feel for the 'real' Ukraine as we mingle with the locals in out-of-the-way villages and less-traveled paths through towns.
