Since becoming the capital of the UN and political seat of NATO, Belgium's capital city, Brussels, has been booming, both in terms of size and importance. Four of our 15 days of this Essentially Europe tour are spent exploring both the Upper and Lower Towns of this unforgettable destination, which is without doubt one of Europe's greatest cosmopolitan cities. After getting our fill of majestic palaces, Renaissance churches, Baroque plazas, well-preserved neo-Classical and Gothic buildings, and centuries-old cathedrals, we leave Brussels to explore some of the country's other notable cities.
Along the way, we have the chance to admire Flemish art in world-famous galleries and explore local markets, where we can best learn about the Belgian people and their lifestyles. From the romantic canals of Bruges, we make headway for Luxembourg and enjoy spending time in the UNESCO Heritage Site that is the Old Town of its capital and make a point of visiting some of the 20 beautiful chateaux that the dot landscape of the small country. We then move on to Strasbourg, France, a fascinating destination that receives international acclaim for its architectural marvels and which has changed hands between France and Germany no fewer than four times as a result of wars between the two nations. Traveling south along the Wine Road, we pass through charming villages and past medieval towers and feudal ruins, before we make headway for Germany, where we spend our final four days of the tour enjoying hot springs, visiting World Heritage cathedrals and medieval relics, and cruising on the Rhine.
