We land in Ljubljana, Slovenia, for some exploration of the castle, cathedral and colorful markets of this charming city that is reminiscent of Vienna and Prague, before heading into Croatia to tour the fascinating historical sites along the Istrian Peninsula, which boasts Illyrian and Roman ancient sites in abundance. We partake of the natural beauty of the Plitvice Lakes, wherein 16 lakes converge in a series of cascading waterfalls, and enjoy the Baroque and Romanesque architecture of churches, cathedrals, monasteries and columns on display en route through various enchanting Croatian towns and cities.
Crossing the border into Bosnia and Herzegovina, we gaze at the exquisite blend of Mediterranean and Oriental architecture and take some time to familiarize ourselves with a few towns in this special destination, before returning to Croatia for a walking tour of Dubrovnik, whose history stems from the 7th century and whose ancient city walls earn worldwide acclaim. Driving along the gorgeous Adriatic coast, we enter Montenegro and visit some locations that have been inhabited since Illyrian times, then cross into Albania, where we overnight in the capital city, Tirana.
For the remaining nine days of our tour, we visit the fortresses, mosques, museums and innumerable attractions of Albania, as well as making a brief foray into Macedonia. Our time in the Macedonia finds us admiring the World Heritage Site of Ohrid, ancient sites, religious buildings and shimmering lakes that lie in the midst of glorious natural sceneries. We return to Tirana, Albania, to hop on a plane for home all too soon.
