With the warm, crystal-clear waters of the Indian Ocean gently lapping at its golden-sand shores, Mauritius is a veritable tropical paradise and there's no better place to get a taste for the exotic than this first port-of-call of our amazing 28-day tour. Set against a backdrop of lush mountains and cloudless, clear blue skies, the incredible attractions in and around Mauritius could find no more perfect a setting to occupy and we take a few days to the visit hilltop fortresses, colourful markets, extinct volcanoes and bounteous nature parks of this small but abundant island nation.
Going from strength to strength, our tour takes us to the 115-island-strong archipelago of the Seychelles, a group of sun-kissed isles fringed by swaying palm trees and deep, clear lagoons, where wildlife untouched for centuries abounds. We see the smallest capital city in the world - Victoria - coconut and vanilla plantations, beautiful cathedrals, UNESCO-protected forests inhabited by endemic birdlife, grand amphitheaters and gigantic volcano craters as we journey through Reunion and Mayotte, and we then set course for South Africa for the next leg of our tour.
Landing in Johannesburg, a city of contrasts that is indicative of the wide spectrum of culture and lifestyle found in Southern Africa, we learn about its torrid and infamous past as one of the focal points in the struggles that eventually saw the end of apartheid and visit buildings of architectural and historical note. We blend a host of incredible safari experiences with exploration of Southern Africa's peoples and cultures, balancing the best of the natural world with the best of the man-made world for a comprehensive adventure tour of discovery not soon forgotten.
Victoria Falls in Zambia truly is a sight to behold and our visits to national parks and reserves - namely Botswana's Chobe Park and South Africa's Kruger National Park and Hluhulwe Game Reserve - expose us to an magnificent array of wildlife that can elsewhere be seen only in zoo; as we travel through beautiful barren sceneries, lush rainforest and mountain-fringed landscapes, we come across, to name but a few: the 'Big Five', zebras, cheetahs, crocodiles, wildebeest, buffalo, ostriches, innumerable bird species and giraffes. Few sights can compare to a herd of elephants roaming the plains, or a pack of lions skulking in tall grasses in their natural habitat. Our cultural exploration of Southern Africa includes trips to colonial towns once of British, German and Dutch sovereignty, major metropolises and traditional mud-hut villages in the countryside, where we see historic sites by the dozen and welcoming locals by the hundred.
