Starting off on a strong foot, we set down in glittering capital, Beijing, to explore a city whose sheer scope and quality of attraction endows it with must-see status on any worthwhile visit to China. Heading onwards to Xi’an, a city that acted as capital to 11 dynasties and once one of the largest medieval cities in the world, we take time to check out its famous burial site and ancient city center, before checking out the incredible sights of the Terracotta Warriors and Great Mosque.
Through colorful outdoor markets and oasis towns on the fringes of the great Gobi Desert, we travel to the Mogao Caves, the greatest repository of Chinese Buddhist cave art, and follow the paths of the Silk Road, the series of trading routes that linked Europe and Asia. Leaving some of the best until last, we have the chance to walk along the Great Wall and visit the Summer Palace and the Forbidden City, which was off-limits to commoners for 500 years.
