A comprehensive tour of the Roman and Greek cities of Libya including Sabrata with its remarkable Colonnaded Theatre, two days at the magnificent site of Leptis Magna, the Greek cities of Cyrene, Apollonia and Ptolemais, the beautiful Byzantine mosaics of Qasr Libya, the enchanting oasis of Ghadames and Libya's main cities, Tripoli and Benghazi.
Tour Itinerary:
Day 1 TRIPOLI
Meet guide on arrival in Tripoli and transfer to city centre hotel for two nights. Depending on time of arrival, walking tour of modern Tripoli before dinner.
Day 2 TRIPOLI
Sightseeing in Tripoli including the superb National Museum, Green Square, Algeria Square Mosque (former Cathedral), the 18th century British Consulate, the 17th century French Consulate, historic Karamanli House, the Arch of Marcus Aurelius and the mosques and souks of the medina where lunch will be taken.
Day 3 TRIPOLI - SABRATA - JANZOUR - TRIPOLI
Excursion to the Roman city of Sabrata with its remarkable 2nd century Colonnaded Theatre and stunning mosaic collection. Also visit the Janzour catacomb museum with its tomb paintings. Return to Tripoli for overnight.
Day 4 QASR AL-HAJ - NALUT - GHADAMES
Visit the beautiful 12th century Berber granary qasr (castle) of Qasr al-Haj, chosen as one of the World’s 80 Greatest Treasure in a recent BBC TV series. Continue to the granary castle of Nalut in a spectacular position atop an escarpment. Continue to the World Heritage site of Ghadames for 2 nights.
Day 5 GHADAMES
Sightseeing in the unique and enchanting oasis of Ghadames on the edge of the Sahara desert. Visit the old town with its labyrinthine passages and take lunch in a richly decorated traditional house. Late afternoon excursion to watch the sun set over the sand dunes; on the way, visit the remains of Ras al-Ghoul, allegedly the remains of an old Roman fort
Day 6 KABAW - TORMISA - GHARYAN
Drive to the Berber village of Kabaw to visit another beautiful qasr. Continue through the Jabal Nafusa mountain range to the abandoned clifftop village of Tormisa and then to Gharyan to visit a troglodyte house and the pottery stalls for which the town is famous.
Day 7 LEPTIS MAGNA - ZLITEN
Full day excursion to the magnificent Roman city of Leptis Magna. Sties include the imposing Severan Arch, Severan Forum, Hadrianic Baths, Market, Basilica, Theatre, Nymphaeum, Circus and huge Amphitheatre. Overnight in Zliten.
Day 8 ZLITEN - LEPTIS MAGNA - VILLA CELINE - TRIPOLI
Visit the Abd al-Salaam Mosque & Shrine in Zliten before returning to the glorious site of Leptis Magna for further exploration. Also visit Villa Celine, the seafront home of a wealthy Roman family. Return to Tripoli.
Day 9 BENGHAZI
Morning flight to Benghazi. Visit the old town, Souk al-Jareed, ancient Berenice and the World War II Commonwealth Cemetery.
Day 10 TOCRA - PTOLEMAIS - SUSAH or AL-BAYDA
Visit the Greco-Roman cities of Teuchira (Tocra) and Ptolemais (Tolmeita), the latter with its Colonnaded Palace and huge vaulted underground cisterns. Continue to Susah or Al-Bayda.
Day 11 CYRENE
Full day of sightseeing at the extensive and remarkable Greek site of Cyrene, founded in the 7th century BC. Sites include the Necropolis, the Temple of Apollo, Acropolis, Agora, Forum, Stoa of Hermes and Hercules, House of Jason Magnus and the Temple of Zeus.
Day 12 APOLLONIA - RAS AL-HILAL - AL-ATRUN
Visit the ancient city-port of Apollonia. Also visit the Byzantine churches at Ras al-Hilal and Al-Atrun.
Day 13 SLONTAH - QASR LIBYA - BENGHAZI - TRIPOLI
Return to Benghazi via the eerie funerary temple at Slontah and the mosaic museum and Byzantine church at Qasr Libya. Flight to Tripoli.
Day 14 TRIPOLI - TRIPOLI AIRPORT
At leisure until transfer to airport for flight home.
