Starting off in Guatemala, we make our way through a land reminiscent of the world the way it once was and a region wherein the past is kept alive through the bloodlines of the ancient Maya civilization that survive in the inhabitants of the area today. Said to be the purest descendants of the Maya, one of the most advanced and influential societies in history, the Guatemalan people honor their heritage by continuing to practice the customs and traditions of their forefathers; oftentimes their religions comprising of a mixture of animist beliefs and the Catholicism that was forced upon them by Spanish conquistadors.
We browse local marketplaces with impressive arrays of beautiful hand-woven textiles and crafts and tread off the beaten path to visit traditional villages and marvel at the colorful costumes similar to those worn by the ancient Maya. As well as exploring the past of this marvelous country and people with trips to ancient and colonial sites, we see history come to life in the dress, lifestyles and beliefs of the Guatemalan people of today.
Through spectacular volcanic landscapes, we travel to Mexico, where we have the chance to explore yet more fascinating Maya sites and ruins, and it is here we also find evidence of the later-arriving Toltec civilization. Making our way through the Yucatan, we gaze in awe at unforgettable temples, wonder at intricately carved monoliths, clamber over massive stone steps of ancient pyramids and come to appreciate the architectural, astrological and engineering genius of these two peoples of ages past.
In our last destination, Belize, we enjoy a short sailing trip across tranquil waters, get closer to nature with trips to zoos and wildlife sanctuaries and relax in the serenity of this tropical-jungle paradise. We take time to explore some of the best-preserved and most intriguing Mayan historic sites of the Americas in Belize and visit colonial sites by the dozen.
