The white-sand beaches of Cancun are the starting point of this 14-day tour through the Yucatan and Belize and serve as the perfect introduction to the color and beauty of the Americas. Traveling into the heart of the Yucatan, we have the chance to explore the fascinating remnants of two of the most notable civilizations in history; the Mayas and the Toltecs.
Jaw-dropping temples, awe-inspiring pyramids and humbling monoliths dot the Yucatan landscape and convey the architectural, astrological and engineering genius of these once-great peoples. We have the chance to enjoy rides through town centers in horse-drawn carriages, 'calesa' in the native tongue, and to mountain bike on an elaborate network of roads known as 'sacbes,' before participating in one of Mexico's most magical experiences; sitting atop a pyramid to watch a glowing red sun set over an endless stretch of forests. Crossing into Belize, we gaze at yet more ancient sites constructed by the Maya; a people who were the most culturally dynamic and densely populated society for their time.
In the countryside around Caracol, there remains to this day more ancient Maya houses still standing than there exist modern houses in all of Belize. We visit islands and small villages whose cultural flavor is not found in large-scale tourism development, foment learning about the history of the area with trips to informative museums and tread off the beaten path to see a diverse array of wildlife, including crocodiles and a wealth of exotic birds.
