Early in the morning drive to the rafting site on the Ili, 90 km. from Almaty after the Kapshagai hydroelectric station. The Ili flowing across a flat area has clear water and moderate current. For rafting, you can choose between multi-seat inflatable catamarans or double-seat kayaks. The rafting time is about 4-5 hours. Half way we will make a stop to see the Tamgaly-Tas gorge where in IX-XI centuries Buddhists made engravings on rocks. Even when it rains in Almaty, it is usually sunny in the Ili region as clouds from in the mountains empty near the city.
Program summary: Bus transfer Almaty – Kapchagai canyon, 90 km. Walk to the river, kayaking 32 km, 3 hours. 1 hour excursion in the middle of the route. Return to Almaty, 120 km.
