Tour Itinerary:
Day 1/4: Paddling on Aguas Negras River
Transport from Lago Agrio to Aguas Negras River. During the next 4 days we will paddle the small black water river downstream. Canoeing will be combined with different day hikes through the jungle. On the fourth day in the evening we will meet the Cuyabeno River which is 3 sizes bigger than the Aguas Negras River and head to a rustic hut that belongs to the Kichwa community of Playas de Cuyabeno. Here we stay in tents inside the hut.
Day 5: Jungle hikes and observation tower
In this area we have the opportunity to undertake hikes on small jungle paths through primary forest, visit the 7-story high observation tower with a spectacular view over the rainforest and observe river dolphins. We finish the day with a night walk, in search of nocturnal creatures. We will stay overnight in the same rustic hut as the previous night.
Day 6: One day visit to Cofán community
By motor canoe we reach within 1 hour the confluence of the Cuyabeno River with the Aguarico River. We will travel downriver until we reach the village of Sábalo, an indigenous community of the Cofán. Accompanied by a Cofán guide we will visit this typical village and will have a walk on a circle trail, getting to know a variety of medicinal plants used by the Cofán. On the walk we will see an old giant Kapok tree that impresses with its immense buttress roots. In the afternoon we return back to the Cuyabeno River where we stay another night in the typical hut.
Day 7: Journey Cuyabeno River upstream, Shaman visit, Cuyabeno Lake District
Today we use a motorized dugout canoe to travel the Cuyabeno River upstream until we reach the Magic River Lodge at the lake system of Cuyabeno. On the way we may visit the shaman of a near by village, learn about medicinal plants and healing practices. In the afternoon there will be time to explore the flooded forest of Laguna Grande by paddling canoe until dark.
Day 8: Early morning bird watching, Return to Lago Agrio
Early morning bird watching and later on we will paddle to different smaller lakes of the area. After lunch we return by motor canoe back to the park entrance. From here we reach Lago Agrio within 3 hours travel by private transport. Arrival in Lago Agrio approximately at 6:00 pm.
