Begin your journey spending three days acclimatizing and sightseeing in the Holy City of Lhasa where we visit formidable Potala palace and other powerful places, join pilgrims at the Jokhang Temple and wander and bargain in streets of Barkhor, the city's old quarter. The Kathmandu Road slips over the 15,700- foot Khamba La Pass and whirls past turquoise lakes and Himalayan giants to the oldfashioned town of Gyantse, where we will enter the sculpture-filled rooms of the Kumbum chorten. Its then on to Shigatse's vast ornate Tashilunpo Monastery.

Travel to the village of Shekar and cross the stupendous Pang La Pass, gazing, if the weather is good, at a vast swatch of the central Himalaya, including Makalu, Everest, Lhotse, and Cho Oyu, - four of the world's seven highest peaks. We then drive up to Everest Base Camp beside the storied Rongbuk Monastery. Rejoining the main Lhasa-Kathmandu road, we cross the magnificent Tingri Plain and begin the almost-10,000-foot drop from the austere Tibetan Plateau to Nepal. After a night in Zhangmu, stroll across the Friendship Bridge into Nepal and drive to Kathmandu.
