The neighboring provinces of Guangxi and Guizhou are amongst the poorest and least developed in the whole of China, but hidden in the mountainous interior is some of the country's finest scenery and most vibrant ethnic minority groups. This is a region of fabulous local festivals, spectacular tiered rice terraces and beautiful rural landscapes. The infrastructure here is constantly improving, but at present basic accommodation and bumpy roads mean longer journeys require greater stamina than the more visited destinations. Most visitors find their efforts amply rewarded any discomfort more than compensated by a truly unique experience.
