Locked away in its Himalayan fortress, Tibet has long exercised a sirens hold on the imagination of the west. Situated on Qinghai mountain plateau that stretches all the way from India in the south to central China in the north and east, it is a land of wild natural landscapes, obdurate cultures and a peaceful population. In 2007, Absolutely China will be running a trip into Tibet, taking the rarely used southern route to Lhasa.
We begin in earnest in Kunming, then head north into Yunnan and Lijiang's turquoise ranges. For the next 11 days, we thrust into the myriad ranges and sub-ranges of the Hengduan Shan, spiraling up to the Tibetan Plateau, from green, tumbling lushness to the heart-stopping austerity of the Plateau, arriving at the Holy City of Lhasa
