Ground School:
Kiteboarding is most quickly mastered by breaking down the learning process. Learning to fly the kite properly and safely before entering the water will dramatically improve your learning curve. This on land class covers rigging, tuning, line management, kite safety, rider responsibility, and flying techniques. By completing this 1hour course, the student will be able to safely launch land and operate a kiteboarding kite on land. “Knowing the kite like the back of your hand, will make getting on a board a breeze!” Lesson 1 - Beginner Ground Course: Absolutely essential for anyone thinking about getting into the sport. All students start with a small foil training kite until they learn the mechanics of the steering, and have a good understanding of the “Wind Window”. From there we jump right into the water with a 4-line inflatable kites. We cover all aspects of launching and landing inflatables as well as water re-launching. Body dragging through the water and self rescue techniques wrap up the first lesson and get students ready for our level two program. Lesson 2 - Inflatable Kites: Goals: Safe operation of an inflatable kite, body dragging with the kite and self rescue. You will learn: - Introduction to inflatable kites - Rigging and setup of the kite - How an inflatable kite works - Safety systems and how the leash works - Review of the wind window - Launching and landing the kite - Flying the kite in shallow water - Relaunching the kite in deep water - Self rescue, how to get back - Body dragging with the kite - Kite and body position - Control of sailing direction - Self landing and self rescue. One Full Day of Kiteboarding - 4 hrs coaching: Only have one day to spare for lessons? This is the program for you! Leave with a taste of riding and a solid introduction to safety, equipment and kite and board skills. Our Introduction to Kiteboarding program is an aggressive, information packed, one-day course that will prepare you to take on the challenges of kiteboarding. This course includes land and water based instruction, focusing on all necessary information to be able to safely practice kiteboarding at most popular spots. By the end of this lesson, some students are getting their first few water starts and a taste of riding! However, this program is not designed to be a comprehensive treatment of kiteboarding basics. To fully cover (and practice) all of the necessary skills, most students prefer our two or three day programs (Fast Track, Beginner Camp). You are always welcome to upgrade your lesson, so feel free to sign up for our popular intro course, and we can always change things around later if we have space available. Weekend Warrior: This class was designed for the workingman and woman. Any two days in a row for 4 hours a day, and you’ll be an accomplished beginner kite boarder. This is Level 1 and Level 2 combined with extra flight time and extended instruction. The main benefit of this class is striking the iron while it’s still hot. Flight time and muscle memorization are the 2 key items for all beginners. Notes: - Windsure provides Kites, boards, wetsuit, harness, helmets and life jackets. Booties are highly recommended, they are available for purchase if required. - On completion of lesson one, we recommend our students purchase a three meter trainer kite in order to increase their kite skills. The more time spent flying the trainer kite, the better future lesson will be. - Water lessons are done at Squasmish. Faculty Information: Other Activities: Facility Information: Notes:
