Botanical painting combines science and art by recording plant life both accurately and artistically on paper. Cynthia begins with an explaination of traditional botanical art and natural science illustration medias, including graphite pencil, pen and ink, and watercolor. She is happy to work with you whatever your media preference !!! You’ll work both out in the field ‘en plien air’ (translate – in lovely gardens), at a nearby orchid finca (farm), and later indoors, where you may draw slowly and carefully from direct observation (you’ll be able to chose specimens to bring with you) under Cynthia’s experienced and encouraging help. The instructor’s step-by- step approach to an exacting field of study welcomes all levels. She's worked miracles with complete beginners, even those with no previous art experience!! And even if you are an accomplished botanical artist, you'll be thrilled with this art and cultural adventure. Join us and begin a lifelong habit of journaling in nature and return home with a collection of small, frameable works of art in breathtaking detail.
Faculty Information:
Cynthia Padilla declared herself an artist when she was two years old. She’s never waivered from that path, beginning in surface design and following her curiosity, training, education and passion into the botanical arts. She has sketched rare orchids in Thailand, wandered abandoned courtyards in India, and traveled the Central American rain forests to document its flora and fauna. Her expertise in these exacting art traditions has lead her to be called upon to lecture, review books, curate and juror exhibitions on this highly specialized subject. But most importantly, her students praise her for her enthusiasm, patience and ability to make an exacting art fun !!!
Other Activities:
*** A highlight of this workshop is Sunday, when you'll see 'alfombras' - carpets made of sawdust, flowers and pine needles that families design and create in the streets in front of their homes. They do this each Sunday during Lent, before processions pass by -- hundreds of people from churches carrying 'andas' - heavy floats - on their shoulders, with figures of Jesus Christ, the Virgin Mary and other saints. Our home base, ANTIGUA, is a delightful, small town with an international ambiance and features great shopping, funky outdoor cafés, but most importantly, warm-hearted, welcoming people. We'll also head into the highlands where volcanoes rise out of the early morning mists of LAKE ATITLAN.
Facility Information:
ANTIGUA is any artist’s dream location. Colorful bougainvillea spill over tumbling rocks
of centuries-old ruins. It's a delightful, small town with an international ambiance and features spectacular visuals, great shopping, wonderful little outdoor cafés but, most importantly, warm-hearted, welcoming people. We'll also explore the western highlands - LAKE ATITLAN - breathtakingly gorgeous, particularily during that 'magic hour' when its three volcanoes rise out of the early morning mists.
Notes:
