Join a group course for a minimum of two weeks or have private lessons for a week or longer. Join a class on almost any Monday after writing a test to assess your level. Each lesson lasts fifty minutes. Our center's course books and other relevant texts are used in lessons with supplementary materials taken from newspapers, magazines or the internet. We want you to use English confidently and appropriately in many different situations. Whether you are in a group or working individually with a trainer, we use the best of modern methods, materials and teaching strategies so you can do this successfully.
A balance of accuracy and fluency practice helps you to develop listening, speaking, reading, writing, grammar and vocabulary skills. Different tasks and activities will motivate you and meet your needs. Interactive CD Roms give extra practice in specific areas. Discussions on videos and articles on different topics, including South Africa, give you an awareness of the cultural and social history of this country and encourage you to share thoughts and ideas. You will have regular evaluation meetings with your trainer/s to make sure that you make excellent progress - and individual help with pronunciation or any other area you or your trainer feel is important.
Faculty Information:
- General Purpose Programme (GPP) - 20 group lessons per week, mornings only - from 09h00 - 12h40. This course will help you communicate effectively in everyday situations. GPP focuses on developing listening, speaking, reading and writing skills and extending vocabulary - and introducing the grammar to support that.
- General Purpose Plus Programme (GPP+) - 30 group lessons per week, mornings as above and afternoons from 13h30 - 15h10. The aim is the same as the GPP, with the additional afternoon lessons helping to build confidence through general discussion and conversation.
- Intensive Programme (IP) - 30 group lessons as above and 5 individual lessons per week (from 15h30 -16h20). The aims of the group lessons are the same as in the GPP+. The individual lesson each day focuses on your specific needs - pronunciation, giving presentations, writing letters or reports, "travel" English, telephoning etc.
- General Purpose Programme/Accelerated Professional Programme (GPP/APP) - 30 group lessons per week (20 General English/10 Business English). This is designed for business/professional people and combines the GPP with the English needed at work/in business, particularly in areas such as giving presentations, business writing, communicating effectively on the telephone, negotiating, participating in meetings and socialising with international clients.
Trainers often work with a number of clients from the same company, which enables them to build up considerable knowledge and expertise in that area. We are a validated examination centre for the University of Cambridge Business.
- Individual Intensive Programme (IIP) - 5 - 40 private lessons per week. This can be added on to your group course or booked separately. Textbooks used internationally form the core of the course and materials are adapted or designed to meet your needs. If you have a specific area of interest - e.g. wine tasting, sailing, golf or SCUBA-diving, we can arrange some private lessons to include some of the vocabulary needed. We can also arrange those activities for you in the afternoons or over weekends.
- English for Examination Purposes - We prepare candidates for the Cambridge First, Advanced and Proficiency exams (FCE/CAE/CPE). These can be written in Cape Town or in your home country. They are set examination preparation classes and start 6 weeks before the examinations. Please contact us for the dates. Those who are
not at the level required or want some extra input are welcome to join us 12 weeks before the course. IELTS, TOEFL and GMAT tuition is generally done one-to-one.
- Closed mini-groups - These are designed specifically for a group with similar interests or for colleagues from the same company. Participants should be at a similar level. Closed groups can be added on to the GPP or IIP morning program - to give a specific focus or provide opportunity for discussion - or be run in the mornings from 09h00-12h40.
