*Aims and Objectives:
- To explore various ways and means of holding together the different elements in a picture in order to create a powerful, unified whole.
- To develop the students’ understanding of the idea of the general versus the particular and how these aspects combine in a successful composition.
- To develop the student’s ideas of their own vision and concerns based on their perceptual and imaginary responses.
*Content:
Project: Say something about yourself without using your own image. The aim of this project is to enable students to develop freely their own understanding of autobiography and focus on the language of paint.
This subject can be approached in a number of ways, such as the construction of a still life of personal belongings, a series of paintings referring to oneself as subject matter, body mark making, the construction of different identities as an enquiry on the multiple facets of human personalities.
On the first day of the term students are expected to have gathered information in order to present the direction of their idea to their tutor. The first session will start with a short discussion about the aims of the course and looking at some exemplar images. Then each student will be seen individually, to discuss the direction of their ideas.
During the first two sessions they will bring ideas and drawings in to a work up into a number of preparatory experimental paintings. They will choose from these preliminary works and develop it in paint as a triptych for the following weeks. Ideally they will continue to work on the painting outside the class time.
One day visit of shows in London will be organized as part of the project to see the broad extent of the language of painting.
