*Aims and Objectives:
The aim of this course is to deal with the practicalities of using color in painting and to encourage confidence in personal and informed choices of color. The time will be divided into 3 areas of subject matter & will be spent painting from what is there & mixing colors one sees, then moving towards an emphasis on choice of color, from reality towards a more personal expression. The final work will be from the students own invention in composition but with reference as to what has been learned; the consideration of color.
*Content:
- Week 1-3 (life model): Setting out of the palette, using a canvas or board and painting what is there, the colors one sees; taking the time to pay particular attention to mixing according to the actuality of the colors. Being aware of the subtleties and complexities within what one sees (i.e. a red is never just a red).
- Week 4-6 (still life/objects): Using a canvas or board with the criteria of day 1. This is an attempt to study and record what you see. It is crucial not to be complacent as to what colors are truly there. Reality is never as it first appears.
- Week 7-10 (using the 1.5 x 2 canvases or board): From what has been experienced in the former weeks, paint an inventive piece of work with allusion to the completed canvases. You may use forms & special areas within these previous canvases as inspiration for the chosen composition and the painting can become abstracted in content if this is desired. The emphasis on this exercise is sensitivity to color and therefore critical evaluation of one’s choices is crucial. Harmony and balance are valuable but risk is an element too.
