- Level 2 (elementary) - This course is designed for those students who already have a previous knowledge of some of the basic structures in Italian. By the end of the program, students will have increased their level of grammar and vocabulary so they can express themselves functionally according to different contexts. They will also have a greater awareness of italian culture and society.
- Level 3 (intermediate) - This course is designed for students having a general command of the more complex structures in the Italian language and a good vocabulary base. By the end of the course, students will be able to use their Italian more fluently and will have a greater understanding of the Italian way of life. The course attempts to improve the student's understanding of the linguistic and extra-linguistic structures in Italian.
- Level 4 (advanced) - this course is designed for students possessing a solid knowledge of the Italian culture and are able to perform at a communicative level. By the end of the course, students will have gained a wider knowledge of the Italian culture and will be more proficient at expressing ideas at an abstract level.
- Level 5 (proficiency) - This course is designated for those students with a high command of the Italian language. Special emphasis is placed on perfecting the student's oral and writing skills and also in developing a global perspective of the Italian culture in relation to the student's particular field of interest.
* Grammar and conversation lessons - the main emphasis of these lessons s placed on the development of communication skills in spoken and written present-day Italian. Examples of the subjects covered in the lessons are:
- Grammar (forming words, sentence structure, spelling and word sounds). Not in the form of strict rules, but through communication and practice.
- Everyday situations which you will encounter during your stay in Italy such as meeting people, telephone conversations etc.
- Vocabulary and idiomatic expressions.
- Styles of language use; when a particular use of language is acceptable.
- Cultural factors such as the meaning of words in different contexts; the gestures and body language which accompany and influence communication.
- Language use.
* The method: Direct method - there are four skills: reading, writing, listening and speaking which need to be studied and developed right from the first level to achieve understanding and expression in authentic communicative situations. We use only Italian language, with beginners too. Situations are simulated in the classroom using authentic teaching material.
Structures and vocabulary are adapted to the lower levels and become progressively more complex. At advanced levels different types of text are used to encourage the recognition and reproduction of different language styles.
Faculty Information:
Native Italian speakers - we place great emphasis on our selection and training of teachers. We look for lively, well-educated, motivated, interesting people who will be capable of motivating all their students.
They must be native Italian speakers and have a University degree; in addition, they have prepared themselves for their inter-cultural task through intensive studies covering various topic areas; they have been trained in both traditional and more modern teaching methods and frequently use role-play, rhythm exercises and word games.
Other Activities:
We include a dynamic, interesting and fun leisure program that is complementary to the process of learning the Italian language. All activities are directed towards socializing in a learning environment and increasing the student's knowledge of Italian Culture. The focal point falls on interest in a specific subject.
From surveys conducted amongst our students, it is clear that extra-curricular activities and excursions are greatly appreciated. Not just as an opportunity for all the students to get to know one another better, but also to gain a better understanding of the culture and way of life of the country.
Most of the complementary activities and the cultural programs are included in the price of the course (NB however there may be additional costs in respect tickets for entrances and/or transport to the event) and will take place in the afternoon or evening.
- Weekly Program: Every Thursday we organize a "spaghetti party" on the beach. Every Wednesday we organize an excursion to culturally rich cities; well-organized half-day trips to cities like Lucca, Pisa, Pietrasanta. Tour guides are professionally trained to work with foreign students. Besides giving information, they encourage the learning and practice of the language.
Every week the Institute also organizes activities such as singing lessons where you can learn traditional songs, films and documentaries of cultural interest, going to discos and other gatherings. Activities are posted on the bulletin board in the reception area.
- Weekend Program: Viareggio is a Mediterranean city with a mild climate and thus an ideal place to spend your holidays. Several times a year the city holds events that bring everyone together, both Viareggians and foreigners alike, such as the Float parade full music, color, and dancing. The cultural activities of Viareggio include concerts for the young, classical music, cinema sessions etc.
For the weekends, we offer information on do-it-yourself excursions to places of interest with respect to art and history: Florence, Cinque Terre, Rome. The number and diversity of excursions to interesting places in the vicinity at the weekend is great.
