The Studio is open all year, but the main season is May to September. Only ten applicants are accepted at any time, minimum stay is two weeks. The Studio is fully equipped for etching and photo-etching, specializing in low-toxicity full color photo etching, and the use of computers. A separate (10 minutes walk from the Studio) 18th Century farmhouse serves as a dormitory house(8 rooms, two bathrooms and a kitchen and reading room to share).
Applicants are expected to arrive with projects in mind and the Studio offers individual technical supervision and assistance whenever needed. The Studio is in Valdottavo (pop. 1500) 8 miles north of Lucca (between Florence and Pisa) in a rural setting, yet in walking distance from the self-sufficient town.
Faculty Information:
Michael Hanning, technical director, specialized in photoetching and computer applications. (languages: German, English, Italian).
Luis Camnitzer, director.
Other Activities:
Because of its location, the Studio is both isolated for restful work and close to landmark cities (Lucca is 20 minutes by train, Pisa is 45 minutes and Florence a little more than 2 hours depending on connections). However, it is expected that applicants come mostly to work on their art.
Facility Information:
The Studio started as a school for printmaking in 1975 and developed the four plate color separation technique applied to studio made art etching. Since the year 2000, the Studio has become a residency program without structured instruction. The Studio has two etching presses and computer (PC) facilities. It is located in a two story barn with an outside terrace for acids and solvents. Painting and sculpture can be produced in the fields surrounding the Studio. The Studio has its own kitchen where residents can prepare their food when not in the dormitory building.
