Join a group of seven to eight photographers, as we explore the finer, lesser-known parts of San Francisco, Marin and the San Francisco Bay Area, rarely visited by tourists. Chase the morning light from San Francisco’s mysterious Chinatown to sunset at the lost ruins at Sutro Baths.
Day trips will include shooting tours in San Francisco, tours of scenic Marin County across the Golden Gate, including the pristine Muir Woods, the Marin Headlands, colorful Sausalito, and will include an overnight trip to Carmel and Point Lobos, former home of Edward Weston. In the spirit of the Steiners’ Greek Island Workshops on Santorini, Glenn and Rose will provide a curriculum of shooting on location balanced with in-depth classroom instruction.
- What You Can Expect
The student should plan to arrive the day before the workshop begins. We can help provide lodging for that night. For the next seven days, we rise with the sun's first rays to shoot the morning's light. We have a mid morning continental breakfast and shoot until lunch. After lunch, we break to recharge our creative batteries, following the siesta within the Mexican/Californian culture.
More often than not, we will also download and review our latest work, recharging our camera batteries as well. We shoot from late afternoon to daylight's end. Then, we will all enjoy dinner at one of our favorite local restaurants. Most of the Workshops have two review periods, at the middle and at workshops' end. This critique is an essential part of your journey.
Glenn uses a high definition digital projector to demonstrate the powers of Adobe Bridge, and the flexibility of the RAW digital negative format. When there is mandate from the participants, Glenn will share his post-production techniques in the new Photoshop CS-3.
- What You Will Need
Bring your imagination! Bring your camera from large format to small format, digital or film. With digital cameras, plan also to bring your laptop or notebook computer to review and work on your images. Glenn will calibrate and color correct your notebook’s color monitor to bring it to its highest level of efficiency.
All digital and film photography supplies are available at short notice at Seawood Photo in neighboring San Anselmo or at Calumet Photo two blocks from the Steiners’ downtown studio. Students are expected to be proficient in the use of their particular cameras and computers.

Faculty Information:
Glenn Steiner has been shooting award-winning, corporate assignments for the past thirty-three years in San Francisco, working for many of the world’s largest corporations and magazines, including the prestigious National Geographic. Glenn’s corporate assignments have taken him shooting across the continental North America, Europe and Asia. Glenn has been studying and shooting digital since 1999.
Rose Steiner is a world renowned Muralist and printer, having designed, painted and produced murals as large as twenty feet by forty feet for clients in the United States and in Europe. Glenn and Rose have led the Greek Island Photography Workshops on the island of Santorini since 2004. We speak English, German (Rose is a native from Hamburg), Danish, some French and Greek. The San Francisco Photo Workshops present a balanced philosophy of shooting, technical learning, and insightful critique. Glenn teaches best on location, balanced with classroom demonstations of Adobe CS-3 Bridge, Photoshop CS-3 and Adobe Lightroom.
The amateur artist takes a photograph, but a professional makes a photograph. Glenn will help guide you how to conceptualize and realise your photograph. By workshops' end, you may find yourself shooting not only less shots, but finer ones than you had ever thought possible. Glenn has found that it is this difference between taking and making, the learning of how to "engineer" one's photography for success, that lifts the superior artist from the masses. San Francisco has been Glenn's and Roses' home for more than thirty-four years. In their explorations of America's finest city, the Steiners have researched and discovered many out-of-the-ordinary, exciting places to shoot.
Glenn and Rose promise to share a new vision of Northern California with you, rarely seen, through the eyes of a San Francisco professional photographer. Glenn, a member of National Association of Photoshop Professionals, regularly studies with NAPP and Adobe to keep abreast of the latest insights and techniques within Adobe Photoshop CS-3. Glenn is also a 30-year+ member of the American Society of Media Photographers in Northern California and serves on their advisory board.
