In his gouache technique, Ronan Olier combines spontaneity and fluidity of watercolor with the dense materiality of oil paint. His work impresses us with strength and vitality. We cannot but admire his wonderful and ever changing skies that he captures with fabulous brushwork and an exceptional subtle palette. There is harmony and drama when he is confronted with the noble appearance of a landscape which he paints with brilliant virtuosity.
I will reveal many secrets of the gouache painting, a splendid technique which, in addition to fast drying, makes it possible to work from thin transparent washes to thick impastos and using brilliant colours with feeling of depth. You will learn how to paint fast which becomes a necessity when working outside. We will pay particular attention to the choice of the palette and the use of coloured papers.
We will explore many of the important areas like composition (focal point, how to get the viewer to look at a specific place, balance, unity and variety, subordination of details to unity, getting the elements connected), color (tone, values, contrast of colors, quantity, quality, local color, color of shadows, color of light, reflections) and the gesture (speed of execution, draw and paint simultaneously). Although painting is often a solitary activity, it is interesting to participate in a workshop experience.
Born in Douarnenez on August 15th 1949, Ronan Olier received his art education in the École des Beaux-Arts in Quimper and the École Nationale Supérieure des Arts Décoratifs in Paris. In addition to painting he practices with the greatest delight many other techniques like comic strip, paper plying, fashion and sculpture. Nominated official painter of the Navy, he had many exhibits in France and abroad and got many rewards like the Gold Medal of Salon de la Marine in Paris and the Prize of the Circle de la Mer.
