Here you can find all the information necessary to plan your stay in the jungle of Guatemala, Central America as a volunteer, Spanish student, or adventurer. Here you can find all the information on our ecological park, Spanish School, international group and school projects, environmental education project, other community projects, and general information on San Andrés, Petén.

We are a small, non-for profit organization located in San Andres, Peten, in northern Guatemala. Our goal is to protect and manage a 150 acre reserve in San Andres, to provide environmental education to all the schools in San Andres, to aid and assist small community organizations, schools, and families in San Andres, and to provide quality volunteer opportunities for travelers and students.

One of our community projects includes working with a local committee of highly qualified and trained teachers who provide daily Spanish lessons. Students live with local families who provide all meals, and can participate in numerous volunteer activities including reforestation projects, environmental education, and conversation projects.

One of the most valuable resources a volunteer has is being able to communicate in two languages, English and Spanish. Volunteers can work with a variety of schools, including elementary, junior high, or high school levels, or work with groups of adults that have a special interest in learning English. Classes can be taught in the mornings, afternoons, and evenings. If volunteers have a TESL degree or an equivalent title, there is an opportunity to get paid a stipend for your teaching.

Students can receive:
* 20 hours of Spanish lessons from highly qualified local teachers.
* Home stay with local family for 7 days which includes 3 meals per day.
* Daily volunteer opportunities in our ecological park.
* Field trips to Mayan ruins or caves.
* Activities such as movie night, working in our community library, and traditional cooking classes.
* Airport or bus station pick up, and transport to San Andres.

Faculty Information:
Our program works best with volunteers who can commit 4-12 weeks of service. Our staff is experienced with training and working with volunteers. We can train volunteers in numerous areas of interest including best management practices, approaches to education, problems that affect Guatemala, possible solutions to various problems, and most importantly, culture. All our staff are native of San Andres, have spent most of their life working with archaeologists, maintaining the construction projects, and protecting the ecological reserve.

Our directors are Inoky Cameros and Matthew R. Peters. Inoky is a graduate of San Carlos University in Guatemala (Masters Architecture) who started working in San Andres in 2000 as an intern for the local government. In addition to managing Volunteer Petén, she also continues to work with the local government with community planning and development. Matthew (Mateo) is a graduate of Penn State University (B.S. Forest Science) and has been living and working in Guatemala since 1999. Matthew came to Guatemala as a Peace Corps volunteer in 1999 and started this company in 2002.

Other Activities:
Come to San Andrès by bus for your Spanish School. Buses leave every hour from the Santa Elena market. Our company organizes field trips to Mayan ruins or caves, activities such as movie night, working in our community library, and traditional cooking classes.

Activities for the students include adopting a tree, recycling, planting trees, making maps, measuring trees, identifying birds, etc., depending on the grade level. Volunteer responsibilities include organizing classes, organizing resources for classes, and teaching, maintenance of museum and education center, and outreach programs.

Volunteers can and are expected to take part in all program areas, and should not limit themselves to working in one particular area. Typical work days run from 8am-12 noon Monday through Friday. Four caretakers and the director run programs on a daily basis ranging from light construction, to trail maintenance, to gardening, to teaching. Afternoons are typically spent studying Spanish, running errands, teaching, participating in activities, or continuing work in ecological park. Activities include field trips, movie night, and working in the community library.
