Our academia offers individual Spanish lessons and group lessons at reasonable prices. Our school is recognized by the Ministry of Education. Our main schools are located in the capitol of Ecuador, Quito and in the charming town of Cuenca. Together with our teachers, we form the Simon Bolivar Spanish School in Quito, bringing you good Spanish training to reasonable prices in a friendly environment.
Our Students are from all over the world. They stay an average of 4 weeks at the School and the majority are university students in their home country. We have an average of 40 students per month.
Our courses:
- Individual Lessons: Classes starts every Monday and you can chose between morning sessions and afternoon sessions. We offer 4 hours of instruction per day and the classes are held from 08.30 am. to 12-30 for the morning session and 1 pm. to 5 pm. for the afternoon session. Based on our broad experience we can almost guarantee that you will be able to speak quite fluent Spanish after 4-6 weeks of study.
- Group Lessons: We can offer group lessons in small groups (max 4-6 students). In 2005 we will offer group lessons for students at beginner level starting these dates: January 3rd, February 1st, March 1st, April 4th, May 2nd, June 1st, July 4th, August 1st, September 5, October 3rd, November 1st, December 5. In 2006 we will offer group lessons for students at beginner level starting these dates: January 2nd, February 1st, March 1st, April 3rd, May 1st, June 5th, July 3rd, August 1st, September 4th, October 2nd, November 6th, December 4th.
Our school is recommended by the Ministry of Education and you will receive an official certificate when you have completed a two month course and taken an exam. Students who spend less time at the school will receive a certificate from the school also.
The following is an example for a 4 week course for beginners based on 4 hours of individual classes a day.
Course Itinerary:
* Week 1:
Day 1: Identifying objects. Informal introductions. Article, Nouns, Adjectives; Agreements.
Day 2: Personal introductions. Formal greetings. Uses of the verb "ser"; Possessive Adjectives.
Day 3: Localizing people and objects. Uses of the verb "estar"; Demonstrative pronouns.
Day 4: Descriptions. Differences between "ser" and "estar"; Adverbs of place.
Day 5: Questions and answers, simple narration. Regular verbs in present tense- ar, er, ir- simple narration;Possessive Pronouns.
* Week 2:
Day 1: Beginning conversation. Expressing future desires; Irregular verbs in present tense- Future formed with "ir" (I am going to eat, and other).
Day 2: Expressing possession. More irregular verbs in present tense. Verb constructions using infinitives.
Day 3: Differentiating between verbs of existence, versus verbs of localization. Expressing obligation. Differences between "hay" and "estar", "saber" and "conocer", "tener" and "tener que".
Day 4: Personal habits. Reflexive pronouns.
Day 5: Speaking in past tense. Regular verbs in past tense.
* Week 3:
Day 1: Extending use of the past Defining periods of time. Irregular verbs in past tense - The impersonal "hace".
Day 2: Writing autobiographies. More irregular verbs in past tense.
Day 3: Improving word order in sentences. Expressing likes and preferences. Pronouns for direct and indirect complements. The verb "gustar".
Day 4: Being able to participate in informal conversations. Imperative forms of "usted"- regular and irregular.
Day 5: Ordering food. Asking for the check at a restaurant. Imperative forms of "tu".
* Week 4:
Day 1: Expressing frequency. Describing past events. Imperfect past tense -Adverbs of time and mode.
Day 2: Expressing frequency. Differences between the imperfect and the simple past tense.
Day 3: Expressing a finished action. Past perfect tense. Differences between past perfect and the simple past tense.
Day 4: Uses and formation of the pluperfect.
Day 5: Telling a story in the past. Explaining historic events. General review of past tenses.
We require a minimum of 20 hours of study per week in the morning session or 15 hours in the afternoon session (1pm to 4pm).
* Individual classes:
- 1-8 weeks (4 h/day): 160 – 1280$;
- 1-8 weeks (5 h/day): 200 – 1600$;
- 1-8 weeks (6 h/day): 240 – 1920$;
- 1-8 weeks (7 h/day): 280 – 2240$;
- 1-8 weeks (8 h/day): 320 – 2560$.
* Group lessons:
- Two students with one teacher: $120/week (20 hours) per person;
- Group lessons (min. 3 students, max. 6 students): $90/week (20 hours).
We offer many options for accommodations; Family stays, apartments or hostels. We have carefully chosen and tested the different options we offer. You are of course free to find your own accommodation. We would be happy to make reservations for you in any place in Quito.
* Home Stays: Many choose to stay with a family to practice their Spanish and get more acquainted with the Ecuadorian culture. The families are carefully selected and they have all experience with foreign students. They offer 3 meals a day and you will have your private room and bathroom. All families are located within walking distance from the school. Home stays are US$120 per week incl. 3 meals a day, your private room and bathroom and laundry service.
* Apartments: We work with an apartment complex close to the school. The apartments are located in a quiet area in the middle of the entertainment district "La Mariscal". You can chose from single rooms to shared accommodation with up to 3 people.
The rooms have phone, intercom. System, small kitchenette and a small living room section (not the smallest rooms). Bed linen change is included but cleaning is addition (US$ 2 per week). The apartments can be rented on a monthly basis. Apartments cost from US$220 to US$250 per month.
* Hostels and hotels: Quito, and specially the area surrounding our school, is packed with hostels and hotels. We (our students) have tested several places and can offer 4 different options with different costs.
- Hotel Plaza. The Hotel Plaza is located very close to the school in a quiet residential area. We have good reports from this place. The price is US$9 (plus taxes) per night and person.
- Hotel Fuente de Piedra. The hotel charges $30 for single room and $40 for double room.
- Hostel Café Cultura. This is a very nice colonial style hostel/hotel with a great restaurant. The rooms are all decorated by a Chilean. Prices from US$46 to US$58 per night (single/double).
Faculty Information:
Our staff have many years of teaching experience. More than 20 teachers have a masters degree in teaching Spanish to foreign students.
Other Activities:
We offer a range of different activities. In addition to the activities mentioned below we sometimes offer cooking lessons, visits to museums, cultural events, parties, group classes with special topics and other.
Weekend trips: These are some of our most popular activities. Every weekend we offer trips out of Quito, either one or two days. We sometimes climb up to 5000 meters (15000 feet), go mountain biking, fish trout in Andean lakes, visit local "fiestas", go hiking around lakes or just relax at the beach. Going on our weekend trips is a great way of getting to know the other students.
Dancing lessons: The dancing lessons are conducted by Edison. He teaches you how to dance Salsa, Merengue and other Latin American dances. Students often end up at one of the local "Salsatecas" to practice more after the classes. The dancing lessons are free of charge.
Other Activities: We also arrange after school activities, such as getting to know the Ecuadorian night life, or do shopping.
