Courses - Focus on IELTS and English for Academic Purposes (Standard) This 11-week course is designed for students who intend participating in a degree program at the University of Limerick or another English-speaking university. The objective of the course is to provide students with the language and study skills necessary for university course work. It is particularly suitable for students who are preparing to sit the IELTS test as a condition of entry to university as it prepares students for the IELTS and offers them the opportunity to sit the exam. The second part of the course focuses on English for Academic Purposes and follows the same syllabus as the four-week English for Academic Purposes course. The main areas covered in the Focus on IELTS and EAP are: - development of English language skills. - preparation for the IELTS exam. English for Academic Purposes (listening to lectures, note-taking, essay and summary writing, reading academic texts, participating in discussions and seminars, giving presentations). study skills (including time management, identifying your learning style/s, effective learning strategies). English for Academic Purposes This is a four week course which helps students develop the Academic English they will require to follow a degree program at an English-speaking university. This course is particularly suitable for students who have already been offered a place on a degree program at our university or another third-level institution, and who would like to improve their Academic English before commencing their chosen degree program. It is also very suitable for SOCRATES/ERASMUS students. The course will include the following aspects of English for Academic Purposes: listening to lectures, note-taking, essay and summary writing, reading academic texts, participating in discussions and seminars, giving presentations. Minimum Entry Level: Students should normally have at least an upper-intermediate standard of English. However, students should familiarize themselves with the minimum English language requirements for the degree program of their choice. Please note that participation in this course does not guarantee a place on a degree program and that applications for places on degree programs at our university must be made separately to the Admissions Office. - Introduction to Information & Communication Technology (ICT) for Language Teachers. This is a thirty-six hour in-service module for language teachers and trainers. The syllabus is similar to the ICT for Language Teachers (Level 2) course described above but this shorter introductory course is being offered for the first time. Entry Requirements: This course is suitable for teachers with basic IT skills but who would like to learn how to include ICT in their teaching. - Focus on IELTS and English for Academic Purposes (Intensive) Participants follow the same course as Focus on IELTS and EAP (Standard) from 09.00 to 13.00 each weekday throughout the 11 weeks of the course. In addition, participants have classes on two afternoons for the first eight weeks of their course, giving them a total of 25 hours per week on those weeks. These afternoon classes allow them to improve their General English and focus on each of the four skills (reading, writing, speaking and listening). - General English Communication Standard This General English Communication Standard course gives participants opportunities to use all language skills with more intensive practice in speaking and listening. The emphasis is on developing fluency and on learning to communicate effectively in English. Communicative activities and tasks include group work, role-playing, language games and problem-solving. Themes relating to Irish Culture are also covered. This course runs for 11 weeks but participants can join the course on any Monday. - General English Communication Intensive As with General English Communication Standard, this course gives participants opportunities to use all language skills with more intensive practice in speaking and listening. The emphasis is on developing fluency and on learning to communicate effectively in English. Communicative activities and tasks include group work, role-playing, language games and problem-solving. Themes relating to Irish Culture are also covered. In addition to the morning classes, participants take an additional five hours over two afternoons. The afternoons will allow them to improve their General English further and focus on all four skills (reading, writing, speaking and listening). These afternoon classes are also suitable for students who intend taking one of the following Cambridge examinations: PET, First Certificate, Advanced. - Business English Standard This course allows participants to develop both their Business English and their General English. The course helps learners increase their knowledge of the specialized vocabulary and terminology, structure and idiomatic expressions used in international business. Through a wide range of stimulating and realistic activities, participants develop their ability to communicate in both business and general situations. Minimum Entry Level: Students should have at least an intermediate level of English. - Business English Intensive As with Business English Standard, this course allows participants to develop both their Business English and their General English. The course helps learners increase their knowledge of the specialized vocabulary and terminology, structure and idiomatic expressions used in international business. Through a wide range of stimulating and realistic activities, participants develop their ability to communicate in both business and general situations. In addition to the morning classes, participants will take an additional five hours over two afternoons. The afternoon classes will allow them to improve their General English and focus on all four skills (reading, writing, speaking and listening). This course is also suitable for students who intend taking one of the following Cambridge examinations: PET, First Certificate, Advanced. Minimum Entry Level: Students should have at least an intermediate level of English. Accommodation Homestay This option allows students to stay with local families. Living with an Irish host family gives the student the opportunity to interact fully in English and gain an insight into Irish life and culture. All our registered families are of a very high standard and offer accommodation in comfortable and friendly homes either within walking distance or a bus ride away from the University. Half board (breakfast and evening meal) is offered during the week and all meals are catered for at the weekend. Our families are supportive and friendly and offer clean, comfortable homes to our students. Care is taken to ensure that two students of the same mother tongue are not placed in the same host family so that interaction in the home is through English. Single rooms are arranged unless otherwise requested. This can be booked for the first weeks of the course or for the full length of stay. Student Village Accommodation The University's newest residential villages, Dromroe and Thomond, were opened in 2001 and 2004 respectively in superb locations overlooking the River Shannon just north of the main campus. All bedrooms offer double beds and ensuite facilities contained in 4 and 6-bedroom apartments. All bedrooms have enlarged study desk areas and the kitchen and adjoining lounge area are fully equipped with all amenities. The villages also offer a Village Center with adjoining Café/Juice Bar and convenience stores as well as a self-service launderette. Amenities include multi channel TV, a card phone in each house, reception and tourist information, proximity to a launderette and shops, free car parking, wheel chair accessibility, and security patrols. Course participants who have reservations in the Student Villages for the Summer Program should make their way to the Village Receptions.
