We are located in Chiapa de Corzo, about 17 kms outside of Tuxtla Gutierrez, the capital of Chiapas. We are in a valley on the banks of the Grijalva River, at the mouth of the Sumidero Canyon. The weather is tropical, very hot some days, and some relief during the rainy season. It is always a good idea to bring clothing that is light and cottony. This is a quiet town, very relaxed and friendly, but again, a little boring as far as night life goes. It is ideal for studying and learning.
Generally, it is a very quiet town. There are no movies or discos here, all that is 20 minutes away by local bus in Tuxtla. Here in the afternoons there are free workshops in the cultural center in painting, weaving, embroidery, potter, music, etc. There are few cafes and economic restaurants.
Tourism is generally only daily, to go through the canyon on boat, other than that there are no foreigners here. It is an ideal place to learn Spanish, but can be a little intense at times. We help in any way that we can with cultural differences, situations in the home stays, etc. We are always available to help in communicating with the community.
The intensive Spanish courses are all taught in a total immersion environment, and let you experience the language and culture of the oldest town in Chiapas. All the courses include homestay with a local family and you will have enough time to enjoy workshops given in the local cultural center at no extra cost. We have programs for children, teenagers, and adults, and we can customize the courses to fit your time frame and needs.
All of our courses include home stay with a local family. The home stays are modern, comfortable and within walking distance of Dunham Institute. You will have your own room and bathroom and in most cases maid service. The home stay does not include meals, you will have to cook for yourself. You have full use of the family kitchen and space to store your groceries.
All classes are taught by certified teachers from the local community that have more than 5 years experience teaching Spanish as a foreign language. We try to begin a course the first Monday of every month, but start dates are flexible.
Faculty Information:
All the Spanish teachers are university graduates with certifications in teaching. All the teachers have 4 years or more experience teaching Spanish as a foreign language.
Other Activities:
There are free workshops at the local cultural center that offer pottery, embroidery, music, laca painting, and woodworking. As either a teacher or a student at Dunham Institute you may find that you have free time on the weekends or the afternoons. There are workshops and classes at the cultural centers that will teach you of the local traditions and art work, and lots of outdoor activities to fill your time.
Students and teachers at our institute sometimes find themselves with extra time on their hands. Chiapa de Corzo is not famous for its night life, but there are plenty of things to do before 9 pm!
* Casa Escuela de Tradiciones: This is our local cultural center, where you are welcome to take classes in laca painting, wood carving, embroidery, pottery, and marimba. All these classes are free of charge and usually take place in the afternoon and on weekends. It is a great place to practice Spanish and learn about the local traditions.
* Academia de Danza Nambahashando: Our local folkloric dance academy that features classes for children and adolescents mostly. There are classes for adults, but the focus is on children. For a small fee children are exposed to music and dances from all over Mexico and will have the chance to participate in local and national exhibitions.
