Our expertise is to " hide" the Dutch you would like to learn within a week full of activities that also would be fun in your own language. We provide courses for all levels (age: 10-100 years). The lessons take place at beautiful locations. Like the real Dutch mansion where Stand-By is based (you can sleep in a nearby B&B or hotel), or a holiday resort. If you like, you can chose a lesson with a theme: sports, nature, drawing, ladies only etc. There is no real class room!
Stand-By courses are unique: in addition to classroom lessons, students will learn and use their Dutch in real-life situations. Their interests and occupation are taken into account when the training is planned. Theme Trainings are also offered. At Stand-By, students will learn Dutch in an effective and stress-free way. We make use of suggestopedia a lot. This method combines elements from psychology, cognitive science, communication studies and management. Also included are: total physical response, non-conscious learning, alpha state, suggestion, multiple intelligences and NLP.
This means that:
* Stand-By lessons are taught in a relaxed and humorous environment that makes the brain curious and ready to learn.
* Stand-By uses mind maps, an effective way to store newly learned things in the brain. Music is important for whole-brain learning: we use songs & special background music for relaxing (baroque), relaxed alertness (Mozart) and energy boosts (popular Dutch songs).
To give the brain enough oxygen, students will move around a lot during the activities. During most lessons, students will get new identities and have a role in a specially designed play; if they wish, they can make a new start and develop their new identities. With help of suggestopedia, Stand-By can triple the performance of students compared to standard teaching methods. More importantly, students will find out that learning can be lots of fun.
* Courses and levels: It doesn’t take much to learn Dutch. At Stand-By, beginners can learn Dutch during a Total Immersion Week. During this course students learn in groups of 3 to 5, Monday to Friday from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. Students will get new identities and take part in a specially designed play.
The teacher reads the play in Dutch over special music while students read along and mark words that are new or strange to them. Activities, games and songs will make it easier to learn useful new words and grammar. Students are never forced to answer a question they can’t answer: answers are found all around them in a sensory rich environment. At the end of the day, students will hear the play again. This time, however, the words will be read over a background of slow baroque music. Students just relax. They’ll know every part of the text: they have experienced it all during the day, word by word!
On Wednesday, the group will go out for lunch and do their grocery shopping and on Thursday, they will prepare their own lunch. Friday morning, a professional instructor will teach a subject (yoga, painting etc.) in Dutch. More advanced students and native Dutch speakers will join the group, so students will get the chance to practice their Dutch in real-life situations. Much material will be provided: a CD, a CD-Rom, a grammar reference, over 100 flash cards and much more.
- Make the difference between surviving and thriving: Tailor-made courses, we can provide exam training, private sessions, business language, flawless writing, train-the-trainer courses etc. At Stand-By, there are no limits! (intermediate/advanced). Over three days, a small group (2 to 4 people) will refresh their Dutch skills and improve their competence. Students can personally choose what subjects they would like to tackle. An assessment will indicate what level students are at.
- Group lessons: On most Thursday mornings students can use their Dutch during our group lessons. They will learn additional vocabulary and useful grammar while having fun! All levels are welcome.
- Dutch Mornings: Take part in fun activities such as art classes, horse riding, or visiting a cheese farm. Everybody is welcome, regardless of their level of proficiency. They will receive a word list in advance to help prepare for the activity. These mornings are meant to show that people don’t have to speak Dutch fluently before they can enjoy themselves in Holland. It will also show them that they can pick up a lot of Dutch in real-life situations as soon as they have a basic knowledge of the language.

You can book us for private lessons, you can join open courses and you can book us for projects like teacher trainings or a special week course only for you and your friends/colleagues.
Other Activities:
The Beginner's week will end with a so called Dutch Morning: a surprise lesson by a professional, in Dutch. During conversation courses at a higher level, we will explore the Netherlands during various trips, participants will meet many Dutch locals to practice their Dutch with. You can also hire your Personal Dutch Trainer for a week. We also offer " Train the Trainer Courses".
Facility Information:
Lessons take place in real life situations. We are based in Bussum, but lessons take place at several beautiful locations all over the Netherlands. Participants have the choice to sleep in a B&B or various hotels in the neighborhood.
Notes:
- A day in a small group (only for more advanced): EUR 150 pp.
- Total Immersion Course for beginners: EUR 815 including lunches.
- For projects: around EUR 550 per day.
