At our college we believe in providing the opportunity to all students, regardless of background or language, to gain the linguistic and educational experience necessary to reach their goals. Through our partnership with Athabasca University and our diverse ESL programs, we aim to provide solutions to all students’ postsecondary and language needs.
Our college is an institution that caters to local and international students who wish to study in a nurturing, supportive and encouraging environment. Building on its success providing high quality ESL instruction, the college has now expanded its focus to include post-secondary educational options for its students. At our college, you can:
- Upgrade your English skills for academic, career or travel purposes;
- Prepare for Post-Secondary education;
- Earn a University degree from Athabasca University, a Canadian public university;
- Learn from highly-qualified and experienced instructors.
We understand the challenges facing students with unique needs and have designed practical and comprehensive teaching methods to ensure all students are working to their full potential. Our college takes great pride in our courses and programs and this shows in our day-to-day operations of the College. Both the administration and the instructors are committed to the success of our students and as a result, students find real value in the education they receive at our school.
Here are some of our courses:
- International Business Communication (IBC) with Work Experience Program: This program combines business communication learning and real work experience in Calgary companies and organizations. Work experience occurs on a volunteer basis and follows successful progression through our college’s International Business Communication course.
The IBC program is designed to help students learn how to effectively use English in the workplace. This course focuses on training students to express themselves accurately, use practical business English, and achieve satisfactory TOEIC (Test of English for International Communication) scores.
TOEIC tests non-native speaker’s English skills and is used by 4000 companies worldwide to evaluate employees. In addition, TOEIC scores may be used as a proof of English skills when applying for both employment and immigration. IBC is a well-rounded program that offers instruction that will aid any student in job searches, preparation and effective communication in English speaking work places.
Course includes:
* Business English Applications:
- Business conversation – phone answering, consultation, and negotiation, etc.;
- Business correspondence – cover letter and resume writing, invitations, business letters, briefings and reports, etc.
* Office English:
- Job search, resume, and job application;
- Office communication;
- Computer office software applications.
* Current International Business Communications:
- Practical and diversified English - keeping abreast with world trends;
- Simulation of marketplace communications;
- TOEIC preparation: instructing students in skills required to obtain satisfactory TOEIC scores.
* Course composition and schedule: The International Business Communication Course is composed of three steps. Each Step has a different combination of classroom studies and volunteer work experience with Calgary organizations. These steps are flexible to ensure that unique student needs are met.
- First Step: Classroom Training Focused: In this step, instruction will be focused on preparation for both TOIEC tests and future work experience. Students are required to register as full time students in order to gain the skills necessary to move onto the Second Step and possible volunteer opportunities. Duration: 4 weeks, full-time classroom (Mon – Fri, 5 hrs per day).
- Second Step: Classroom Training and Warm Up for Volunteer Work Experience: This step is designed to provide students of intermediate upper level English capability with preliminary volunteer work experience. Students will spend a minimum of 80 hours in the classroom and will spend one or two days per week in their work placements. Work time, location and duration are flexible based on student performance and organization need. Duration: 4 weeks, full-time classroom (Mon – Fri, 5 hrs per day) / part-time classroom (Mon – Fri, 2 hrs per day).
- Third Step: Work Experience Focused: This step will be focused more on gaining work experience than on classroom learning. There will be approximately 20 to 50 hours of classroom instruction, depending on the student’s English level. The volunteering time will vary between 16 and 100 hours during the month. Duration: 4 weeks, part-time classroom (Mon – Fri, 2 hrs per day).
In addition to its ESL offerings, our college has strategically partnered with Athabasca University to offer self-paced flexible degree options for students. The quality, flexibility and convenience of Athabasca degree programs, coupled with the on site instruction and supplemental tutoring from our college make it a viable option for students who are looking for an alternative to other post-secondary options.
For our international students, our college can provide or coordinate homestay arrangements. By living with a Canadian family, you can experience the lifestyle and culture of Canada while improving English conversation skills. This is an ideal opportunity to become familiar with Canadian foods, traditions and holidays. It is also an opportunity to socialize in a relaxed atmosphere.
