Our company is a language school, a family and a small international community - all in one. The school was established in 1983, is accredited by the British Council and is a member of ARELS and the international network, TANDEM. Our vision has been to create an environment where people feel confident, relaxed and happy. We feel this promotes optimum language learning. Language students come from all over the world. They are all independent adults - our average age is higher than in most centers - and they share a desire to communicate in English.
Our methods are varied and challenging. Classes average 5 people. The course is experiential and, after class, it involves activities, peer learning and the wider community. Everything is designed to activate language. The course is fully residential at our school. Our working methods are varied and challenging. The emphasis is always on communication. Grammar, vocabulary, stress, pronunciation, collocation and intonation is noticed and learned as it arises.
We are open from April until October. You can enroll on any Sunday during this period. People generally stay for between two weeks and three months. We only take beginners from April to June. Cambridge and IELTS exams can be arranged on request.
Our teachers are motivating and supportive, professional and enthusiastic. They enjoy creating a secure and dynamic learning environment. They employ a humanistic approach and are thus sensitive to the needs of individual students.
Facilitators bring specific skills to the center. They could be musicians, storytellers, volleyball coaches, actors, walking guides, evening speakers or simply people who enjoy the conversation, the food and the life here at Nab Cottage. Teachers, facilitators and students live together.
Our school stands alone in the center of the Lake District National Park, overlooking Rydal Lake and surrounded by mountains. The Lake District National Park, 2 hours north of Manchester Airport, contains the highest mountains and the biggest lakes in England. Rydal Water, in the center of the park, is 3 KM from the villages of Grasmere and Ambleside.
The area is famous for its wonderful scenery - at all times of year the landscape is magnificent and the walking is superb. The area is also famous for its literary connections - the Romantic Poets, including Coleridge, Wordsworth and De Quincey all had long connections with Rydal and Nab Cottage in particular. The gardens around the cottage and barn are used for lessons when the weather is fine. There is also a patio with barbecue where we often eat lunch, an orchard and vegetable/flower gardens.
The accommodation is in the cottage. The bedrooms are all cosy with beautiful views, and most have their own shower and toilet. Downstairs there is a sitting room with log fire, a piano room, dining rooms, a TV room and large farmhouse kitchen.
The food at Nab Cottage is delicious: we make our own bread and use organic produce wherever possible. We all eat together. Breakfast, lunch, dinner and teas/coffees are included in the price. You can buy alcoholic and soft drinks at cost price. We ask each student to help once a week on a rota system to help serve and clear the meals.
You can get here by trains and National Express buses that run from airports in Manchester, Liverpool, Glasgow, Newcastle and London. Manchester has the best connections. Windermere is our nearest station. From Windermere you can take a bus or taxi to Nab Cottage. We can also arrange taxi collection from the airports.
