Our College of English is one of the most modern English language colleges in New Zealand. We are located on the spectacular campus. Our College of English is approved by the New Zealand Qualifications Authority (NZQA) and has been awarded the highest possible audit cycle by the NZQA (three years). All courses are NZQA accredited.
Courses are held in specially designed facilities on the campus. The campus is beautifully landscaped and you can use a fully equipped library, cafeteria and sports facilities. You can also use a language laboratory, self-study center, and computer room with access to free email. You have the opportunity to practice your English skills, enjoy recreation in a relaxed environment, and have a stimulating, cultural and social experience. Courses offered include General English, Business English, English for Academic Purposes, and Cambridge Exam Preparation courses. Students may enroll for short-term study from 1 week. Our highly trained and dedicated professional staff has many years of experience in looking after our students' educational, practical and social needs. The number of students per class is kept small to ensure that students develop confidence across the four skills areas of listening, speaking, reading and writing. Here are some of our courses: General English Classes are held all year, at 6 levels from absolute beginner to advanced. The course is 25 hours per week. The minimum age for students is 15 years. All General English courses (including part-time study) concentrate on using English for communication and will include: - Special sessions to develop all skills: listening, speaking, reading, writing; - Special vocabulary development lessons; - Discussion of news and current affairs; - Assistance with individual progress; - New Zealand culture and customs; - Use of published course material; - Language lab sessions; - Computer room sessions; - Help with continuing learning after your CCEL course. Full-time study includes all of the above, plus options of: - Additional communication skills classes to give extra listening and speaking practice; - Study skills (to improve reading and writing for exam courses); - TOEFL* / TOEIC** preparation (minimum entry levels apply). Students are assessed on arrival, during, and at the end of their course. Progress reports will be provided on request and students receive a report and Certificate of Attainment at the end of their course. Business English Full-time Business English courses are offered five times a year at 3 levels: pre-intermediate, intermediate, intermediate and upper intermediate/advanced. The course is 25 hours per week and four weeks in duration. The course will introduce basic business concepts and language. Students will practice these through a range of texts and situations from business contexts. There is a high level of cross-cultural content so students become aware of how business situations vary between countries. Previous knowledge of, or experience in, business is an advantage. Business English students will have access to facilities and special lessons as listed for General English. An alternative full-time Business English option for students is a Cambridge Business English Certificate course (BEC). Minimum entry levels apply. Provisional places will be offered to students applying from overseas. Level of placement will depend on screening test results - available overseas or on arrival. English for Academic Purposes All English for Academic Purposes (EAP) courses are 25 hours per week and include 2 hours per week of supervised self-study, research or exam practice. This 24-week course is taught in 2 modules. The first module of 12 weeks is a bridging course, providing intensive language development introducing the student to academic English in content and style. It is designed as preparation for module two of the program. The second module (12 weeks) of the course practices the skills needed for successful study at tertiary level. It provides skills in academic English by introducing New Zealand teaching and study methods. Preparation for IELTS* is included in the course and all students take the IELTS examination at the end of Module 2. Our College of English is much more than a place to learn a new language or improve your English skills. We offer a full and exciting program of optional activities including adventure activities and sightseeing, sports and social events, and overnight and weekend trips. Popular activities include weekly sporting activities, horse treks, snow boarding or skiing, whale watching or swimming with the dolphins, visits to local wildlife parks, hiking, and weekend or overnight trips to scenic attractions. Homestay accommodation can be arranged with a New Zealand family. We look forward to welcome you! Faculty Information: Other Activities: Facility Information: Member discount: Notes:
