Photographers love life, light, and joy, and all that touches the senses! Maybe nowhere else in the world can this be found more, than in Rio. The Rio workshop will be much more than simply an experience in photography-it will offer the students an exposure to a way of living full of energy, sensuality, outdoor activity, and humanity in one of the world’s most beautiful and exciting cities during the amazing time of the Rio Carnival.

This workshop will be taught by Peter Turnley, one of the world’s leading photojournalists. Peter has worked in over 85 countries around the world and discovered the soul of Brazil while making a photographic portrait of the Brazilian national soccer team, the year leading up to the 1998 Worldcup. He has returned frequently to Brazil on assignment and has fallen in love with Rio and finds it to be one of the most alive and wonderfully human cities in the world. He taught the first Rio Carnival Workshop in 2005.

Faculty Information:
Peter Turnley is currently a contributing editor/photographer for Harpers Magazine creating quarterly, eight page photo-essays with his photography on themes of national and international pertinence in the grand tradition of visual authorship. His work is often seen in the world’s most prestigious magazines: Newsweek, Stern, Paris Match, Geo, LIFE, National Geographic, The London Sunday Times, VSD, Le Figaro, Le Monde, and DoubleTake.

His photographs have been on the cover of Newsweek Magazine 43 times. He worked as a contract photographer for Newsweek Magazine between 1984-2001. He has covered nearly every major news event of international significance in the past twenty years. His pictures have been published the world over and have won many international awards including the Overseas Press Club Award for Best Photographic Reporting from Abroad, and numerous awards and citations from World Press Photo and Pictures of the Year competition of the University of Missouri.

Turnley has produced portraits and covered many of the world’s most influential people of our time; Gorbachev, Yeltsin, Putin, Mandela, Arafat, Schroeder, Chirac, Clinton, Reagan, Bush Sr, Lady Diana, and Pope Jean Paul 11 to name a few.

Other Activities:
The Rio Carnival will be at the center of the Rio Workshop experience. Students will visit prior to the carnival rehearsals of the amazing and famous Samba Schools that perform during the Carnival Parade. Here one is exposed to some of the most amazing dancing and popular spirit to be found anywhere. Students will also follow the “blocos” or itinerant carnival celebrations in the streets of Rio. Students will be pushed to spend much time walking and discovering the sensuality and contrasts of life to be found in Rio. They will be introduced to the famous beaches of the city such as Ipanema and Copacabana, to the outdoor life of great parks like Lagoa, to the rhythm and music of the samba in the City’s dance halls, and to captivating neighborhoods such as Lapa, and Rio’s cafй, restaurant, and night life. Rio is a city with great contrasts in social life. They will be pushed to discover the energy of the people of Rio, witnessing life through sport, dance, beaches, physical expression, music, and night-life.

Facility Information:
Students will be encouraged to develop a photo-essay of coverage of the week of the famous Brazilian Carnival, and should use 35mm digital cameras. Shooting digitally in color or black and white is optional, but students will be encouraged to choose one or the other and stick with it during the course of the workshop. Students will be expected to bring their own laptop and an external hard-drive for downloading images and storing them. Students should have an editing program called “Photomechanic” made by Camerabits on their computer.

Peter Turnley encourages the students to have at least one wide angle fixed lens or zoom,i.e 28mm, 35mm, or 50mm, or wide angle zoom lens, and he encourages students to have a lens that opens to a minimum of F2.8, as often shooting will be in low light conditions.
