Light reveals the beauty of the world to us. The light of New Mexico is extremely special. The colors are vibrant and the wide-open skies project a luminosity that transforms the textured and curving architecture and landscape into a visually magical and wondrous place. This workshop is being offered to all fine artists who are excited to find new inspiration and experience the fun of a different culture and cuisine within our borders.
The workshop will help you discover and fine-tune your own reactions to light, your own personal vision and creative process. It is important to understand in practical terms how the behavior of light defines the nuances of form, color, space and atmosphere in all mediums.
The schedule of this workshop will emphasize time for careful study of the relationship between environment, light, architecture, and people, especially time for recognizing those elements, which may effectively lead to paintings or photographs of insight and emotional value, while always being aware of the effect that light plays in capturing the illusion of value, form, color and space.
Faculty: Nancy Ori and assistants
Nancy J. Ori is respected internationally as an industrial photographer, video producer and fine art exhibitor. She has been affiliated for many years with the Ansel Adams Workshop in California, is on the faculty of numerous museums and art centers in New Jersey. She will be assisted by at least one mature individual who has been a previous student and studied with Nancy for several years.
Formal and informal architecture will be found in the small country towns of Abiquiu, Cerrillos, Chimayo, Trampas and Truchas as well as the large cities of Santa Fe and Taos. While in Chimayo, we will visit the Santuario de Chimayo, one of the most popular churches in New Mexico, famous for its miraculous healing mud, and the numerous shops filled with fine traditional Chimayo weavings.
We will spend one day in the city of Santa Fe, a city that embraces its natural environment unlike any other in the United States. A city who’s beautiful, adobe architecture blends with the high desert landscape. A city that is, at the same time, one of America's great art and culinary capitals.
All shooters should consider the quick turn-around of either C-41 film or digital prints for the opportunity of feedback during the evening sessions. There is a local lab that we will deal with to either process film and/or print 4x6 images from digital files. Instruction will take place classroom style for orientation and camera discussions. There will be plenty of one-on-one time on location. Critiques will take place in the evenings off projected images from the days shoots.
