Stormy seas, fall skies and Superior’s mighty shores are some of the most dramatic and powerful landscapes a photographer could dream of. Capturing them on film is a passion of artist Rob Stimpson. This workshop, timed to take perfect advantage of Superior’s surely moods and spectacular scenery, will appeal to the person who knows the workings of their camera and wants to create, not just take, photographs. There will be plenty of time for shooting, critiquing and sharing techniques.

The workshop is based from our site and lodge, located right on the shore of Lake Superior. Our front room affords “Superior” vistas and is the perfect place for discussions and evening relaxation. “Rock Island” as our site is known locally, is becoming a popular spot for storm watchers to gather as Superiors fury crashes upon our rocky shores. During the course of the workshop we may have the opportunity to take to the waters by canoe or kayak, travel to other local photographic hotspots (such as Old Woman Bay or the Badlands) or hike some of Superior rugged headlands as weather and interest permit.

Faculty Information:
Rob Stimpson is a professional photographer, photography instructor and outdoor guide. He runs his own business, Rob Stimpson Photography, specializing in outdoor lifestyle images, photography workshops and is a member of Arts in the Wild, an Ontario tourism initiative. His travels have taken him to Arctic Rivers, trekking in Africa, Antarctica and numerous other adventures in regions of Canada. He recently returned from six weeks in Antarctica running the photo program for GAP Adventures on their expedition ship. In 2004 he worked with noted writer Craig Thompson and completed a book for Firefly Books (Boston Mills), The Wild Art of Ontario, a guide for the creative spirit, which will be published later this year. Rob's genuine love of the wilderness and unique ability to capture the spirit of the land on film is an inspiration to everyone he teaches.

Other Activities:
There may be opportunity, as weather permits, to go out in the 36 ft Voyageur Canoe, sea kayaks or canoes. There are hiking trails close by as well.

Facility Information:
Naturally Superior Adventures is located on Lake Superior, approx. 5km from Wawa, Ontario on a 7-acre peninsula in Michipicoten Bay at the mouth of the Michipicoten River. Our site, known as “Rock Island”, is adjacent to Lake Superior Provincial and Pukaskwa National Parks, all on the Great Lakes Heritage Coastline; the longest undeveloped stretch of shoreline of Lake Superior. Our unique location on Lake Superior is inspiration for artist and adventurer alike.

Our main lodge, located right on the shores of Lake Superior, provides accommodation in three motel rooms and has a large common area/meeting room with stone fire place. There are incredible views of Lake Superior from every room. We have a full kitchen specializing in hearty “Canadian fare” with fresh healthy ingredients.

On site we have an office, paddling shop, camping facilities (camping is an option for those not wishing lodge or motel accommodations – there is no charge for camping for workshop participants – sites are located on our protected beach), many canoes, sea kayaks and 36ft. voyageur canoe.
