The course will offer an introduction to the traditional techniques of hand-built ceramics which have been used by artists for centuries. Participants will be encouraged to explore several hand-building techniques using coils and slabs of clay.
Teaching will be carried out in a very informal atmosphere and there will be an opportunity to create a wall plaque and a pot using inspiration from the surrounding area.
Faculty Information:
Anne Haworth designs and produces high quality ceramic art works using traditional materials and techniques. A full time independent professional artist and an experienced instructor of students of all abilities and age-groups, Anne has exhibited widely throughout the UK and her work is sold in many private galleries countrywide. Her ceramics can be seen in private collections, businesses and hotels across the world, from Paris to Dubai.
Although she has always been involved in creative art, Anne's career was initially in journalism and she worked for many years on newspapers, magazines and as a freelance writer. She returned as a mature student to embark on a BA honours degree in three dimensional design and art history and has been successfully self-employed as a ceramic artist ever since.
She is a member of many creative organisations including Northern Potters, Design Gap, the Craft Guild and Moving Clay. She exhibits each year at the prestigious British Craft Trade Fair in Harrogate where, in 1997, she won an award for her work.
Anne takes as her inspiration the natural world. She says: "I feel that the process of making is an evolving one which requires great sensitivity between maker and material. A hand-made object holds a certain power and, for me, the process of creating is compelling. I work from a very limited palette using a minimum of decoration, believing that the surface is part of the form rather than an addition to it. The objects I make are tactile and are meant to stand alone."
