The French House Party is listed Top Retreat in the National Geographic book, “The 100 Best Worldwide Vacations to Enrich Your Life” written by the prestigious American travel writer Pam Grout. The legendary singer-songwriter Dean Friedman returns to the French House Party in July 2011 to again operate his residential summer songwriting course with us – taking a break during his annual European concert tour.
Acknowledged as one of the best lyrics-and-melody composers in the music industry and with the perfect, instantly-recognisable soaring voice which gave him hit songs like "Ariel", "Well Well Said the Rocking Chair", "Lydia" – and, of course, the quirky and memorable British chart-topper "Lucky Stars" - Dean has remained a major inspiration to other songwriters for more than 20 years.
His sweet and catchy love-song "McDonald’s Girl" accompanies the restaurant group’s 2011 TV advertising campaign in the States - 30 years after he first wrote it! This is a rare and exclusive opportunity to spend four days at the French House Party learning the techniques of composing with a performer frequently compared to Billy Joel and Paul Simon – and described by one music critic as “A genius. An original. A musical craftsman of unrivalled expertise.”
After his August 2010 shows at the Edinburgh Festival, Three Weeks reviewer Tom Bell declared: ”Dean Friedman is entirely unique and utterly brilliant” – a sentiment which was seconded by the group of singer-songwriters who joined Dean’s 2010 course in France. The all-inclusive 4-day break will contain 3 days of group instruction workshops, jamming sessions, one-to-one tuition, writing, performances and the bonus of a privately-arranged Dean Friedman evening gig. Non-participating partners sharing a room with a participant are welcome at a reduced rate of £100 off the full price.
Dean Friedman is a respected singer-songwriter who has released many albums - the most recent, "Submarine Races" in 2010 - and performs all over the world. He also runs songwriting workshops for children in his native New York.
Dean has fitted his performance work around composing soundtracks for film and TV, writing seminal textbooks in the 1980s about the newly emerging synthesizer industry, and being an inventor. One of his companies, Cool Stuff for Kids, markets his own creations of over-sized interactive musical instruments with names such as Honkblatts and Boobles, for theme parks and children’s playgrounds.
In the 1980s he entered the world of computer games. Inspired by a powerful virtual reality programme which put the user inside the game – similar to the later Eye Toy - in 1989 he designed his first big virtual reality game for children, called “Eat a Bug”, which was licensed by Nickelodeon TV and he went on to produce more games. He is now the President and Creative Director of InVideo games.
Unsurprisingly, he now defines himself as ‘a multi-media artist’. His 4-day workshops with the French House Party will concentrate on teaching the techniques of writing both lyrics and music. Participants will perform with Dean on the final evening.
