One-Week Painting Class
- Location: Bellagio, Lake Como, Italy
- Workshop fee: 1250 EUR per person
- Dates: September (Sun-Fri)
- Inclusions: 28 hours of class time, all art materials, welcome & farewell reception, and 1 dinner.
Our one-week painting workshop is an intensive introduction to a method of painting handed down from the French Impressionists to such American painters as Sargent, Olinsky, Henri, Brackman, and Schultz.
Fresia provides a 3-hour painting demonstration of the method which breaks down the painting process into stages.
Then students will be walked through the method so that by end of class on Tuesday each student will have painted two still lives in the studio using this method.
In the remaining 3 days students will continue with the method and choose whether or not to continue painting in the studio or work en plein-air (outside).
This is a complete, structured, step-by-step method that includes both the "mechanics" of painting or craft and the philosophy of painting as developed by the French Impressionists. The method, however, is intended to function somewhat as training wheels in that its purpose is to enable the student to express him or herself fully. The entire course, and then some, is contained in a book written by Jerry Fresia, which can be reviewed here. All levels of experience are welcome even the absolute raw beginner.
Jerry Fresia received a PhD in Political Science from the University of Massachusetts at Amherst and has taught at numerous US colleges and universities. He left academia in 1989 and settled in San Francisco to pursue a career in painting, which he has studied throughout his life, primarily in the studio of William Schultz. In San Francisco he was an exhibitor and Executive Director of two outdoor art exhibition groups. He has written extensively on both art as well as the political-economy of the United States. He writes a blog called "The Art Class".
Students can take a ferry and visit Lenno, Varenna, Menaggio, Como and other towns on the lake. Bellagio and Como are especially good for shopping and you will find inexpensive silk products, which is a big industry on the lake. Villa and garden tours are available, and a visit to Villa Balbianello in Lenno is highly recommended. For those with extra days, group tours to St. Moritz, Lake Maggiore, Lake Orta, etc. are available thru a local travel agent. For the active travelers, walking and hiking trails abound. Cost for any of these activities is separate from the workshop fee.
The painting workshops are held at the artist's home in Bellagio, which is located in the central part of Lake Como. The villa, which offers fantastic views of the lake from the studio and the garden, is within walking distance from the center of town.
Lodging and transportation costs are not included in the workshop fee. You can find good accommodation for as little as 100eur/night. Private transfer from/to Malpensa airport, which is the nearest airport to Bellagio, costs € 125 one-way. If you wish to take public transportation, we can provide detailed directions.
