An incredible week of serious painting, study and fun in a charming fishing village and other exotic locals along the gorgeous Pacific coast of Mexico, with renown artist - workshop leader Lian Quan Zen! If you are interested in building your watercolor skills and learning the techniques of this master watercolor artist then this workshop is for you. Lian generously shares his knowledge, wisdom and expertise through a variety of exercises, demos, lectures and critiques. Immerse yourself in the joys of authentic Mexican village life at one of the most beautiful and arts oriented locales in Latin America, in the safe and serene village of Boca de Tomatlan, 10 miles south of Puerto Vallarta.
A glimpse at the workshop and the weeks itinerary:
At Puerto Vallarta International Airport, where we will meet you and bring you to the studio, (we drop you back at the airport following Saturday). You will be shown to your private room, with balcony and wonderful views, settle in, refresh yourself – breath in the unique environment of the Boca and then, in the late afternoon, join other participants on the second floor of our company in the main dining and living area for a snack and to meet and greet one another. We will have a short orientation and then at approximately 6:30 we will cross the river to have dinner at Ramones’ Hauchinango (“Red Snapper”) Restaurant, (this is a fishing village after all, though there are other things on the menu as well, to accommodate all varieties of diets). We dine on the beach with our feet in the sand as we become acquainted with one another and watch the sunset over the magnificent Bay of Banderas, waves lapping on the shore just a few yards away.
Breakfasts (approx. 8:15 to 9 am) and Lunch (1 pm.) are prepared by our wonderful Mexican Chef Ruby and her assistant. These meals are served on the main floor of our company in the large dinning / living area and consists of a variety of healthful and delicious lacto ovo vegetarian fare. Always available are, coffee, tea, fresh fruits and juices, cereals, granola, peanut butter, jelly, cheese and milk. These are complimented by such things as pancakes with maple syrup (we are from Massachusetts) fresh breads and cheeses as well as traditional Mexican dishes like chiliquilles or huevos rancheros. Please let us know if you have any specific dietary restrictions.
In this workshop Lian will do several demonstrations every morning. Throughout the week our instructor will individually visit each student, so that you are assured individual attention. The methods and techniques of Lians painting: “Color Pouring and Blending and “Paint Around” techniques and how to compose and design a painting will be demonstrated and discussed.
Another gourmet meal is prepared and served by our chef Ruby and her assistant at approx. 12:30 – 1 and after lunch is siesta till approximately 3 pm. This is your time, – work in the studio if you like or engage yourself in one of the myriad of additional activities available to you at the studio.
In this particular workshop we will be doing our painting in the company’s magnificent 1000+ sqr. ft. open air studio with panoramic vistas of the mountains, quaint fishing village, river and ocean. We will also be getting inspiration on location both around the Boca and at the exotic locations our hosts will bring us, (included in the price of the trip). Students that desire to, should come prepared to paint outside, en plein air, at the excursion sites. The workshop is geared toward all levels of students who work in water media. For your convenience, our studio is open 24 hours. This is a workshop that will be fun and an in depth learning experience. Come and spend a week relaxing in the tropics, finding inspiration and learning from one of the great contemporary watercolor artists teaching today.
Lian Quan Zhen started sketching and painting in his childhood and continued as a hobby while practicing medicine as a family physician in Canton Province, China. After immigrating to the U.S. in 1985, he obtained a Bachelor of Arts Degree from the University of California at Berkeley in 1992 and a Master of Architecture Degree from MIT in 1996. He has had many shows in the U.S., Hong Kong and China and has developed an international following. His paintings hang in numerous institutional and private collections, including the MIT Museum which has collected 14 of his paintings.
His art teaching credentials include the University of California at Berkeley where he taught watercolor outdoor sketching for 8 years; watercolor and Chinese painting workshops nationwide through out the U.S. as well as in Europe, Canada, Mexico, Bahamas, China, South Africa and Australia. Also, Lian has been an invited juror for California, Colorado, New Mexico, Georgia, Arizona and Kentucky Watercolor Societies’ exhibitions and other local shows. His paintings have been featured in magazines such as Watercolor 94 Spring, Splash4, Collectors (Hong Kong) and books of Landscape on Watercolor (UK), Finding Your Visual Voice and Painter’s Quick Reference books by North Light Books: Flowers and Blooms, Dogs and Cats, Birds and Butterflies, Landscapes and Drawing and Painting Animals – the Essential Guide.
Lian is one of the most popular authors of North Light Books. Four of his books published by North Light Books have been distributed internationally. They are: The Chinese Painting Techniques for Exquisite Watercolor, published in October of 2000; the Chinese Watercolor Techniques – Painting Animals, published in December of 2004, with demos on video tapes and DVDs made by Teaching Arts in UK; Chinese Watercolor Techniques for Exquisite Flowers published in 2009; Chinese Landscape Techniques for Watercolor in September 2013. They were main selections for North Light Book Club members. North Light Books has recently printed a coffee table book with a collection of Lian’s paintings, one of two painters chosen amongst the publisher’s artists.

Our studio is designed in "Hacienda Style" architecture, built with the jungle and mountains behind it and the river and ocean at the front door. The Large Kitchen, Dining and Living area opens with glass doors to the large veranda and the general "feel" is a unity and flow of the outside and inside. Each bedroom has its own private bath and a view of the ocean from the bed! On the bottom floor, just a few stairs from the beach, is a large garden patio with table and chairs and numerous lounge chairs for sun bathing and relaxing. The open air studio on the top floor is approximately 1,500 sq. ft. with panoramic vistas of the Boca village, river and bay. Equipped with a full bath, a "washing station", easel, tables and chairs, along with all manner of drawing materials and papers, watecolors, acrylics, pastels, brushes, glue guns and other assorted materials, unless specified for a particular workshop, the only thing a participant needs to bring is their.
