Christine Q. says her experience at IOI "was truly amazing, different, beautiful, informational, fun, peaceful, funny, surprising, volcanic, oceanic, and Galapagonian all at the same time. I would go back in a second!" Monique G. says IOI "makes this trip a life experience that all should have. The two weeks I spent on Isabela was definitely the most fun I’ve had anywhere in my life and I can’t wait to go back!"
IOI is a Florida-based non-profit organization that operates in close affiliation with leading international academic institutions in the US and Europe for the exchange of professors, students, and researchers. We offer a rare opportunity to study abroad in the Galapagos and on top of that offer fully transferable credits.
The curriculum concentrates on the specific uniqueness of Isabela and the Galapagos Islands. It is a hands-on, field course-based experience with emphasis on cultural exchange and immersion in the far (wild) west of the archipelago. We offer a very private and intimate setting. The cap on students each semester is 15 in order to provide for a size group with an effective Professor – Student interaction. Average class size is 10.
Our undergraduate program is designed in two ways: we offer short programs for winter intersession, Spring Break and Summer and full semesters abroad in the Fall and Spring. Our short programs are 2 – 3 weeks long, worth 3 credits and the students are housed at the fully equipped, state of the are dorms at the institute.
During the full semester abroad experience students earn 15 credits (+3 optional internship credits) and live in host families for full cultural immersion and language exchange. Accreditation and academic stewardship is provided via a transcript through one of the top universities in South America, the Escuela Politecnica Superior de Litoral (a polytechnic university headquartered in Guayaquil, Ecuador).
A regular day at IOI looks like this: a seminar in the morning including theoretical background material and then time for individual study, community/ research projects or leisure time, fieldwork in the afternoon; and discussion and/ or presentations before dinner.
The classes are taught by a rotating group of internationally renowned professors coming from the best universities in marine and environmental sciences worldwide
Leisure activities include but are not limited to: Hiking, Biking, Horseback riding, Beach volleyball, Beach soccer, Surfing, Snorkeling, Scuba diving, Fishing, Photography, Camping, Volunteer and intern opportunities.
Our state of the art institute, labs and dorms are located 150 ft from the 3 mile long, pristine beach of Puerto Villamil, Isla Isabela, Galapagos. The premises are an old Franciscan mission and church building made from coral and lava rock by the earliest settlers in Galapagos during world war II. We converted the mission into dorms and offices, the church into our lab and a large conference room as well have renovated and adapted the schoolhouse building in the back yard as your classroom. We provide 24/7 wireless internet on the entire premises (all the way out to the beach and all our spacious, newly renovated guest rooms have private bathroom with ocean or volcano view.
