Tajikistan is a mountainous country, ideal for trekking and hiking. Dushanbe, the Capital, has a fine market on Mondays. There is a mosque, a Russian church and a synagogue to visit. See the stuffed Marco Polo sheep in Tajikistan Unified Museum; the Ethnographic Museum is also worth a visit. Go on a three-day trek in the mountains with a donkey to carry your pack to see Lake Kara-Kul which was created by a meteorite over 10 million years ago. It is rumored that Yeti live in these mountains, but Yeti-hunting is strictly controlled! Drive or hike along the former Silk Road and admire the incredible scenery. Don’t miss the seven color-changing Muragazor Lakes and don’t leave the country before taking in a wrestling match and Bushkashi, a strange but popular game.
