The Greater St. Lucia Wetland Park World Heritage Site is one of the few natural wonders left on earth where there are unspoilt wilderness beaches, vast wetlands and game reserves all combined into one reserve.
We welcome you to our ’home from home’ lodge, where we provide comfort and friendship which we complement with a host of safaris to explore these incredible wonders!
1. How long has the business been operating and how did it start?
M13938 has been in the Morrison family for many years. Hugh Morrison, the owner of the lodge grew up on the property. His great grandfather started a store called the “Lake Store” in order to supply villages surrounding the lake with basic supplies. The lake store still stands on the Makakatana property some 90 years later. Hugh and his wife Leigh-Ann, decided to use the land that had been passed down to Hugh through 3 generations, to start a lodge as the property was a prime location. After eventually getting permission from the various conservation authorities, M13938 was opened 12 years ago on the lakes of St. Lucia.
2. What is your company's mission?
The Lodge aims at providing our guests with an experience that no other lodge in this area is able to offer. With such diversity and the varied activities we offer, our guests are able to experience the iSimangaliso Wetland Park to its fullest. We also strive to provide a service to our guests that leaves them feeling at home and comfortable and well as their needs completely taken care of.
3. What does your company specialize in?
We specialize in superior service and a safari experience like no other.
4. Who is the founder or owner of the company and briefly describe his/her past activities?
Hugh Morrison grew up on the property as a young boy who originally learnt to speak Zulu before learning to speak English as the rest of his family did! After setting up a clothing business in Durban, Hugh met Leigh-Ann Ker-Fox and together they decided to use M13938 as a location for a Lodge.
5. What is your most popular travel package and why?
The most common activity that our guests request is the boat safari on the Lake St. Lucia. This is a private concession of the estuary that no other commercial boats have access to and, we are lucky enough to be the only boat on this stretch of water. The activity is especially popular because it offers an entire wetland exploration.
6. What is the best compliment you received from a client?
It is particularly difficult to pick one guest comment, although our guests comment mostly on the service they receive as well as the absolute beauty of the lodge itself which is situated right in the middle of coastal forest. They also enjoy the knowledge of our two very experienced rangers who provide guest with information on many aspects of the Wetland Park including the animal behavior, vegetation, history and geology. Not to mention the fact that we are a bird watchers paradise!
