Largely grown in my own garden and prepared in my own kitchen.

Not lucky enough to be born in New Zealand however found the place when I came here on an Agricultural exchange in 1974 and after graduating from Agricultural College in Scotland I returned in 1977.
After farming for a short while I became involved in hotel management in Queenstown and Auckland before buying and operating my own bakery coffee shop in Christchurch for 5 years. Upon selling that I went to live in Japan for 5 years to learn the language with my young family and now operate my own inbound tour company catering largely for the Japanese market.

However it is my pleasure to guide and host people of all nationalities around the central South Island and Christchurch in particular. I am able to provide bookings for other tours and hotels as well as to recommend other independent operators in other New Zealand centres.

I am based here in Canterbury and born in Canonbie Scotland and Japanese people who are my main client base like to come Cankou when they are overseas.

Should clients wish to stay in a typical New Zealand house with a kiwi who speaks Japanese with an organic vegetable and herb garden as well as a hot house. My home is 5 minutes from the airport and 7 minutes from the Cathedral so I am very conveniently located in the suburb of Papanui.

1. How long has the business been operating and how did it start?

My company started in 1997.

2. What is your company's mission?

It is a lifestyle choice by myself. To enjoy visiting places with clients that I personally enjoy going to. Incorporating some good food, meeting the local folk, picking the best the weather offers and giving my guests a day they will always remember.

3. What does your company specialize in?

Day tours in the Christchurch area and using my skills from hotel days, coffee shop days from farming days to show something of the land I love to live in.

4. Who is the founder or owner of the company and briefly describe his/her past activities?

Hello, I am Craig Rome of M18420 offering day and half day tours in Christchurch and around the South Island for English speaking as well as Japanese guests. I have been guiding here for 16 years. Emphasis on flexibility with itineraries to make the best of our weather and can offer homestay in my home as this can enhance your flexibility. M18420 is my small travel company catering for the needs of the discerning independent traveller who wishes to enjoy the outdoor life and scenery of the South Island of New Zealand. Originally I migrated here to manage dairy farms, subsequently managing hotels and latterly owned a thriving coffee shop bakery in. I am a 55 years old Scottish born Kiwi who speaks and writes fluent Christchurch before living in Japan for 5 years. Tour guiding for 16 years.

5. What is your most popular travel package and why?

My Garden tour has been ranked either #1 or #2 over the last year or so. Christchurch really is so beautiful and park like with some amazing private and public gardens. I am an organic gardener with an emphasis on growing vegetables, plus my experience in both my own bakery coffee shop and 4 years in hotels makes me want to look after guests the way I would want to be looked after myself.

6. What is the best compliment you received from a client?

We were picked up by Craig (6 of us) and then spent the best day of our entire cruise with him. His knowledge of the Island and flora was amazing. His trip was well planned and very interesting. All six of us enjoyed the day. His itinerary and thoughts for the 5-6 hours, were combined with our thoughts, which turned out amazing. I would highly recommend Craig Rome and his tours for any of your needs in New Zealand. M18420 - You made out my day very special. Thank you. Erline and Josh Rabin, The Rosenbergs and Starkmans.

Hi Craig,

Sorry it\'s taken so long to reply, been back a week now and it seems like a world away. Thanks again for wonderful time, the kids have voted your home as the best place we stayed all holiday. We had a great 2 days in Devonport on the north shore after we left you, it\'s not often you go on holiday and come back thinking that everwhere you had been was fantastic.

Dear Craig,

I agree with Celina that the trip would have been less interesting and educational if we did not have your presence. Like I said, the bounce/ spring in your step/ walk and the enthusiasm in life has rubbed off on me. It has not worn off even though it is now exactly 4 weeks since we last met.

Do keep on doing this work of bringing people to see your beautiful country. Do keep that spring in your legs. If you can send me a photo of your weave picnic basket\'s inside, I can ... view more make a clone for our own picnic!
