Base of operations: Australia
By using only locally-owned accommodation, restaurants, and outfitters on our Small Group trips, M18637 ensures the community receives a direct economic benefit. Experiences off the tourist trail, like visiting a private outback pioneer homestead or making didgeridoos with an aboriginal family, provides guests with a deeper cultural understanding. All of our guides are local people, and every Small Group trip includes an interpretive walk led by an aboriginal guide to give our guests an indigenous perspective.
M18637 actively supports cultural and environmental initiatives--such as Treeforce and The Aboriginal Children’s Advancement Society--through financial contributions and direct participatory involvement. We have made a commitment to offset the carbon emissions that result from all of our office operations, trips, and staff air travel through Sustainable Travel International’s myclimate™ portfolio, thereby making us a carbon-neutral company.
Every guest is given their own reusable water bottle, cloth shopping bag, and thanks to our partner the Australian Rainforest Foundation (ARF), a native tree is planted in each guest’s name. Guests receive a certificate detailing where their tree has been planted and why this is such a special gift of life to the rain forest and to the health of our planet.
M18637 founder, Laurie Pritchard, spent 12 years leading and developing outdoor adventure programs for organizations such as Outward Bound, The World Outdoors, Adventures Cross-Country and People to People Student Ambassador Programs in the USA, and RnR Adventures in Australia before founding M18637.
M18637 is a member of Sustainable Travel International (STI), The International Eco tourism Society (TIES), Eco tourism Australia, Tourism Tropical North Queensland, and The International Gay and Lesbian Travel Association.
1. How long has the business been operating and how did it start?
A massive typhoon left owners Peter and Laurie stranded at the Tokyo airport in 2002, they met by chance, and the seeds for M18637 were planted. They eventually married and settled in Cairns. Through their travels in Europe, Asia, North America and the islands of Oceania together, Peter and Laurie have seen how travels can be transformational, and how the human connection transcends race and borders. It was and still is their dream to inspire this sense of connection – to Australia’s people and places—in every guest. M18637 was established in February 2008.
2. What is your company's mission?
M18637 seeks to provide travelers with adventures and activities that connect them to the natural world and to local people. We aim to provide the highest caliber of customer service, professionalism and guide services so that guests may have the best holiday possible.
3. What does your company specialize in?
Custom trips for adults and student groups, off-the-beaten-path adventures and authentic educational experiences.
4. Who is the founder or owner of the company and briefly describe his/her past activities?
M18637 owners are Laurie and Peter Pritchard. Growing up in Australia, Peter spent his young life riding waves, walking barefoot, and playing guitar. A professional music career then blossomed, and he played gigs up and down the coast of Australia. With higher education calling, Peter left music to get a degree at Griffith University, and soon found his passion in design work. He began developing websites and marketing materials as a creative outlet. Laurie was raised in the United States but her heart belongs to Australia. Educated at the Cranbrook-Kingswood school and the University of South Florida and L’Institut de Touraine in France, Laurie also had a brief teaching stint in China. A love of the outdoors led to 12 years working for and developing adventure trips for organisations like Outward Bound, The World Outdoors, Adventures Cross-Country and People to People Student Ambassador Programs in the USA, and RnR Adventures in Australia.
5. What is your most popular travel package and why?
The Adventurer is our most popular trip – it is high action, and a good way for solo travelers to meet other people. It is all inclusive so people don’t have to worry about all the "extras" that seem to pop up when you’re travelling.
6. What is the best compliment you received from a client?
A few of our favourites: "M18637 LISTENED to us and tailored the custom, private trip we wanted, but made it better than we could have imagined. They were helpful at every step of the way, from initial planning through trouble-shooting while we were on the trip." Jane Antin, Boston MA (travelled in Oct ’11) "Best tour company EVER! Rick was the best tour guide we could ever ask for. I would trust him with my children's life. We all learned so much from him and our entire trip through the experiences we enjoyed on our trip to Cairns through M18637" Jaime Fahy and family, Guam (travelled in Sept ’11)
